New Albums To Look Forward To In 2017

The music world lost numerous popular artists in 2016, the latest of which was George Michael. The British singer who first gained fame as part of the duo Wham passed away on Christmas Day, adding to a list of obituaries that includes David Bowie, Prince, Glen Frey, Keith Emerson and Greg Lake.

In spite of those passages, the year did manage to leave us with something to be thankful for. We were treated to brand new albums from veterans like the Monkees and Loretta Lynn, as well as a surprise release from Wilco.

As we move into a new year, here are fifteen new studio album releases we can look forward to at some point in 2017.

The Shins

James Mercer is always working, spending the past two years on his Broken Bells side project and also contributing vocals to Modest Mouse's Strangers To Ourselves album. Mercer's primary band has already released the single "Dead Alive", so fans are anticipating the entire album within the next few months.

The Flaming Lips

Ozcy Mlody is the name of the new disk scheduled for release on January 13, and Wayne Coyne's alternative band has already released a single called "The Castle."

Death Cab For Cutie

Ben Gibbard and his indie group will issue the follow up to Kintsugi, which will be their first record without co-founder Chris Walla.

Toro Y Moi

It will not officially be under the name Toro Y Moi, but Chaz Bundick is still the mastermind behind the record made with the Mattson brothers. Its title is Chaz Bundick Meets the Mattson 2, and it is set to come out on March 31.

Train

These guys have been around for over twenty years, and they have hit the charts dozens of times. Their new album, called A Girl, A Bottle, a Boat, will be available on January 27.

The Jesus and Mary Chain

It's been over a decade since this alternative group released new material, so fans will welcome Damage and Joy when it comes out on March 24.

Coldplay

No release date has been set for the new offering from these alt-rock veterans, but the title is Kaleidoscope.

Tears For Fears

Songs From the Big Chair sprang the group into stardom thirty years ago, and fans are hoping their new effort will have a similar impact. It might even make us "Shout" and go "Head Over Heels."

Depeche Mode

These new wave veterans have been busy the last few years, so fans will not be surprised to receive another new record.

Son Volt

February 17 is the release date for Notes of Blue, a fresh collection from Uncle Tupelo co-founder Jay Farrar's band.

Old 97s

Rhett Miller and his alt-country act are set to reveal Graveyard Whistling on February 24, their first output since Most Messed Up from 2013.

Modest Mouse

A Stranger to Ourselves is now two years old, so fans will be glad when Isaac Brock and his mates finish the new album.

My Morning Jacket

Jim James made a solo gem last year, but 2017 promises a reunion with his Louisville band on a follow up to 2015's The Waterfall.

Todd Fancey

A member of the New Pornographers, Fancey on January 27 will unveil his solo album Love Mirage. A single, "Baby Sunshine", is already streaming.

Mac Demarco

The news was just announced via Twitter on December 28 that he had finished his new album, his first full length since Salad Days in 2014.
