How could Moses have led his people to the Promised Land, unless/ until, he knew, or at leader had a reasonable idea, where that was? Similarly, how could anyone try to lead effectively, if he isn't clear, what he wants to achieve, and how to proceed? Remember, most constituents look to their leaders, for guidance, ideas, and true leadership! It is the responsibility of a quality leader, therefore, to begin with some sort of personally motivating/ meaningful, vibrant, vital vision, perceive things as he would like to see them, and conceive of a plan, to get there. Let's review why it is so very essential, for leaders, to know WHERE they want to go, etc.
1. Why; when; what: One should always begin by considering why something might be needed, desirable, and the best approach! Know this clearly, including considering as many ramifications as possible, and including contingencies, in your planning process. Create a realistic timeline, so everyone is clear on the timetable, as well as creating a measurable way of examining progress (this if often referred to as metrics). However, in order to bring your plan to fruition, you must create, develop and use an action plan, showing what, and when you will do each portion.
2. Hear; head/ heart: Truly hearing something, requires an absolute commitment to effective listening! A quality leader must be able to balance the necessary emotional/ motivation components, with the logical, action parts. This is also known as the head/ heart balance!
3. Empathy; example: While carefully considering what your constituents perceive, and balancing their needs, concerns, priorities and objectives, with the necessary components of making the organization stronger, a real leader proceeds with the highest degree of empathy, and shares his thoughts, ideas and visions, with those he serves. One must do so, by being willing to consistently set the example, for others to follow, because they see their leader, doing as he says. Be a walk - the - walk, rather than talk - the - talk, type of leader!
4. Relevant; rational; rationale: Can you differentiate between a mere idea, and a relevant one? Can you clearly articulate your rationale, in a manner that others, will consider rational, motivating, and relevant?
5. Earn respect; excellence; expectations: Don't think your constituents will automatically listen and/ or respect you, unless you clearly, earn their respect! One does so by exhibiting excellence, and balancing expectations, in such a way, the group grows, maintains relevance, and does so, in a sustainable manner!
If you decide to become a leader, begin by knowing what you hope to achieve, and WHERE you have to go! Doing so, requires commitment, effort and consistency!
