Tis the Season Full of Folly

'Tis the Season Full of Folly

By Steve Wickham

BESIDES the commercialisation of the Christmas season, I have found it to be a bizarrely stressful season for so many.

Certainly, the pressure on people to buy unusually special gifts for their friends and loved ones can be enormous. But there is also a great deal of stress on relationships, notwithstanding the stress that comes with the consumption of food and drink that comes with the season.

Just today I was going through a roundabout and was almost hit by someone insisting they betray my right of way. Didn't even seem to look. But it's indicative of the hurry and folly of the season.

There is, however, a danger in anticipating such a season as more problematic socially than other months of the year. We begin to see only the bad. But it can also be an advantage if we're motivated to help people who seem to be stressed more than usual.

What can we do? For ourselves... for others...

Reminding ourselves that we have a choice at any given moment to embrace the moment's rest, even when we're working hard, is the recognition of a transformative mindset. For others it's a case of simply understanding into the stresses they might be facing and enduring.

Tapping into the conversation going on in our minds is useful. The banter we have with ourselves can either increase the stress or decrease it. It can expand our joy or shrink it. Isn't it ironic that the Christmas season is sold as the time we reflect on what we're grateful for, yet, being a season that truncates time within the enormity of a plethora of tasks to do, we can quickly end up jaded.

Between consumerism and consumption, and the contraction of time within the complexity of many tasks to do, Christmas in the modern-day breeds dis-ease in anyone seeking peace. It's important to get back to Christmas' core message. A baby was born to become a man, to endow the world with God's salvation plan.

Metaphors Gone Wild: Dogs and Time

Metaphors Gone Wild: Dogs and Time

By Marlene Caroselli

Continuing our consideration of everyday concepts in metaphoric terms, time can be viewed as a familiar animal in the domestic scene--the beloved and sometimes feared dog. We cannot prevent dogs from barking; similarly, we cannot prevent time from passing, no matter what we are doing or not doing. But, we can domesticate that dog and make it our best friend. Or, we can allow it to become hungrier and hungrier, fiercer and fiercer until it transforms into a formidable enemy.

As the ancient Greeks assured us, we need "moderation in all things." Yes, time places considerable pressure upon us to get things done, especially in a busy workplace and/or a child-filled home. The challenges-from everyday demands, from employees or family members, from technological developments, from social obligations, from the competition-driven global environment-are enormous. The past no longer offers the comfort of precedent-not in today's rapidly changing climate.

Just as companies have come to regard themselves as integrated, highly responsive, and evolving systems, so are individuals expected to integrate diverse elements; to respond easily, clearly, quickly; to evolve continuously as learners and leaders and responsible adults. If we are unable to adapt when the time calls for a switch in direction, time will be wasted and projects may be doomed. The wise and properly-timed use of agility and resilience bespeak survival tools for the climate in which most of us are living.

Agility is one way to save time. Choosing to be agile is just one of the choices we can before us, regarding how we spend the time of our life. Quite simply, if you choose to continue doing things that waste time, you are willingly relegating to the trash bin of life moments that you will never recapture--unproductive moments, idle moments, moments that add little or nothing to the quality of your life and your work.

Be inspired by the words of management guru Peter Drucker: "Everything requires time. It is the only truly universal condition. All work takes place in time and uses up time. Yet most people take for granted this unique, irreplaceable, and necessary resource. Nothing else, perhaps, distinguishes effective executives as much as their tender loving care of time." Vow to care for time the way effective executives do. Identify your time-wasters and commit to finding cures for these causes of lost minutes, hours, years, lives.

While the top five time-wasters below relate to the workplace, they extend to our personal, as well as our professional lives. Implement the cures and then, with the time you've saved, spend it in beneficial ways with those you love, including yourself.

Time-Wasting: Causes & Cures

1. Fire-Fighting

Think about the work required of you on both short-term and long-term bases. Then, plan a schedule for your next day of work.

2. Interruptions

Although you may choose not to be as assertive as Napoleon, who promised, "You can ask me for anything you like... except time," you will have to find the words that allow you to continue working when others try to interrupt. Your first assignment in this category is to create (and promise to use) five phrases to subvert interruptions. Your second task is to read the following list aloud to yourself at the beginning of each workday.

1. I'm disciplined enough to simply list all the people and things that may demand my time instead of stopping my work to attend to those people and those things.

2. I'm interested enough to examine the list at the end of each day (for at least a week) to learn what kinds of interruptions are hindering my accomplishments.

3. I'm tactful enough to advise co-workers of the times when I can't be interrupted.

4. I'm realistic enough to know I'm capable of eliminating some of the distractions that currently plague me.

5. I'm professional enough to follow through on all the distractions I temporarily put aside in order to make a serious dent in a complicated project.

3. Poor Planning

Are your strategic plans worthless? They are, according to futurist John Naisbitt, if they've been written without a strategic vision in mind. While your plans may not be strategic in terms of the organization's vision, they should nonetheless reflect your personal improvement-goals. These are but a few of the questions to keep in mind as you make plans to improve your use of time and to enhance your contribution to the organization.

√ What am I doing and doing well?

√ What am I doing and not doing well?

√ What measurements will gauge my success?

√ What evidence do I have that I am thinking globally (organizationally) and acting

locally (applying broad issues to my own spheres of operation and influence).

√ What am I not doing that I should be doing?

√ Which of my outputs will have the greatest impact on the departmental or organizational mission?

√ What do our customers want/need/deserve/expect?

√ What mistakes have been made recently by those in comparable positions?

√ How would I define the realities that face us?

√ What combinations/alliances could optimize the time spent on planning and the

effort expended on ultimately implementing the plans made?

Incorporate answers to any three of the above questions into a plan for improved productivity or better use of organizational time.

4. Perfectionism

It's as true on the macrocosmic level (Franklin Delano Roosevelt noting that perfectionism may obstruct the paths to international peace) as it is on the microcosmic level (an obsessive need to have everything exactly right): the need to be perfect can make you a poor time-manager.

Ideally, you'll refer to the answers to the following questions whenever you're tempted to exert all your time and energies on a project:

1. Which of your assignments require absolute perfection?

2. For which of your assignments could excellence replace perfectionism?

3. For which assignments is good enough good enough?

4. What are the negatives associated with perfectionism?

5. Inability To Say "No"

Good communications involve both the content and the context of a message. It's possible, for example, to profess your ignorance and simultaneously sound intelligent. It's also possible to fire someone and have him or her thank you, rather than react in a violent fashion. And, it's entirely possible to say "no" to a request and sound gracious as you do so.

How to Make Dreams Come True - 10 Practical Ways

How to Make Dreams Come True - 10 Practical Ways

By Ugochukwu Sosthenes

• OUTLINE YOUR SET GOALS: Not having a goal, is like driving without a destination, you will exhaust both yourself and the car too, hence to begin you need to have clearly defined goals, objectives that you want to achieve, when you have set goal(s) it as if you are driving towards a known destination.

• DON'T BE DISTRACTED: This world is filled with distractions and attractions. Do not underestimate the power of distraction, consider this: what do you think could happen to a driver who continues to look through his window while driving in the high way?

He may lose control, or may be hit by another vehicle, so when you are riding on the high way to reach your goal always avoid being distracted or attracted to anything that will slow down your pace or at worst stop you. Distractions can come in many ways; it can come in form of associations or individual habits.

• FINDING THE RIGHT ASSOCIATE: A good associate is like a co-pilot, he stays alert with you. Note that he is not a co driver but a co-pilot, this is because when a driver is tired he pulls over at the Conner of the road and rest but when a pilot is tired he does not even think of pulling over or parking he must reach his destination and hence both in his absence and presence a good co-pilots will provide the support needed.

So the need to associate with people having the same frame of mind cannot be over emphasised. Associating with people who are already where you want to be will make you live and behave as if you have achieved your goals.

• LIVE IN THE FUTURE: "To catch a monkey you need to act like a monkey" so says an African proverb, yes indeed you need to learn how to jump and dive. You need to start thinking everyday as if you have achieved goals and dreams.

• MAKE A LIST OF HUDDLES: After outlining your goals can you make also a list of things that can possibly stop you from achieving your goals. This is necessary because anyone who fights a battle without a well defined enemy might be in for an unusual surprise.

Hence outlining and understanding problems is the key to solving them. Outlining them will help you tackle them with the right weapon.

• WORK ON YOUR SET GOALS: Goals are not investment where you just put your money and watch it grow. It requires daily attention if it is to be attained, every work has tools which makes it possible to be done, for example if you are trapped in a dense jungle you may need a cutlass and a GPS in other to find your way home, selecting the right tools can help you achieve your dreams.

Imagine what could happen to a student who ought to write a biology exam but has been practicing only chemistry, it is necessary that one attain a level of balance in other to achieve his goals.

• BE HUMBLE AND DO NOT CREATE ENEMIES: If you defecate on the road while embarking on a journey, definitely you will meet flies while returning. Do not step on people while you climb your social ladder, this is so because successful people needs help like every other person.

"One thing is somersaulting another thing is landing properly "when you get to the top there is nowhere else to go except down, hence if ever you created enemies while climbing, these ones may get back at you when you slide a little bit off the top. They may even drag you down totally instead of helping you.

• BE PREPARED FOR UNFORESEEN OCCURRENCES: Many a men say: "I wish I could see tomorrow" hence do not expect everything to go as you have planned, unforeseen occurrences has been a constant part of the human history, hence preparing for it and knowing that it may happen not only helps you to deal with it but also makes you not to feel too disappointed when it happens and hence quit.

• USE YOUR PAST TO CREATE A BETTER FUTURE: A good driver will always consider his side mirror, not because he is driving backwards but because he wants to get a balance view of the road and understand how best to drive, likewise our pasts or mistakes should be used as warning examples and help us to create a good future,

• DON'T GIVE UP: It is as simple as that, yet very difficult. If you apply the above given suggestions it may be very difficult for you to quit and also if you know where you are headed problems will not make you quit, setbacks will only even make you even stronger.

Remember a the value of gold appreciates, only when it has been refined in a furnace, a good captain is made not on a calm sea but on a very rough sea.

Problems and difficulties can only make you stronger, SEE YOU AT YOUR GOAL.

By David L. Feinstein

The year is nearly at the end, and some folks are wondering how to add additional value for their leveraged sales. In many cases its simple, as promoting and explaining the unique value point of each one. Other times it can be difficult, especially in a saturated market place. However, this doesn't have to be the case. There are five different tips to help you foster more value, gain more business and keep your audience happy with your efforts. All of these tips will not cost you a dime to spend, but it will cost you time to develop and synchronize with your marketing efforts.

5 Tips to boost your leveraged sales

Now, when you're looking at your leveraged sales products or services, consider the pros and cons from a prospect's point of view. What is the biggest turn off for you as a prospect? Is the value of the item questionable? If not, and you would continue to move forward with the product. Maybe it's time to re promote your offering. Here are the five tips to help you gain more momentum.

Some leveraged sales items can benefit from bundling them together. A good example are eBooks, bundle between two and three together for one low price and market it. This can help increase attention and grab those who are seeking a good deal. If you cannot afford to do so, but you can offer a discount for a limited time. This can turn cold prospects into hot sales in a moment's notice. This is an effective way if you promote it for a month ahead of time. Now for the giveaway, but link it to your sign-up form for your emails. This way you can collect viable leads for your business, while providing extreme value for your subscribers. Offer free updates for the product, providing the product is a guide or other content form. This can help you keep and attract new prospects. Such Is the Importance of a Complaints Policy for a Business Set-Up

Such Is the Importance of a Complaints Policy for a Business Set-Up

By Albert Cook

What does a complaints policy mean? Lucidly put, it is a process which ensures business set ups and their employees abide by specific laws and regulations which apply to them. These corporate complaints cover up both internal policies and rules applicable to federal laws and state laws.

Risk is something which companies of all scales experience. Moreover, in some cases, even a risk management strategy is just not good enough.

However, with a proper complaints management system, companies are able to cover all essential bases and safeguard in the best possible manner.

Discussing the Importance of a Sound Complaints Management Strategy:

According to the most successful companies around the globe, two things are crucial to keep a track of all their compliant requirements:

Firstly, they have a complaints division usually headed by the CCO - Chief Compliant Officer who monitors all crucial issues.

Secondly, they incorporate an adequate complaints kit. It includes databases and extensive software required to monitor audits, important court cases, performance management sheet, key management factors and more.

Implementation of such policies brings about noteworthy differences in the operational proficiency of a company.

It Helps Built Up a Positive Reputation in the Market

Every company aims to secure a respectable stature in the market and be counted as reliable for their target audience. Success of a business depends largely on the kind of public image they have. However, if the end customers find a corporate agency facing numerous court cases and other such similar issues, they tend to lose their trust and start doubting their service/product quality. Surely, it's the last thing any business owner would want to experience.

Having a proper complaints dogma, company owners can ensure they don't have to witness this dreaded day ever. They can easily uphold their positive image and gather advertisements, sponsorships, etc.

Again, having a reliable complaints management policy ensures companies get through different legal cases, accidents and other image hampering concerns.

Effective Risk Management:

Risk management is an essential strategy which most companies need to incorporate. Identifying potential risks and preventing them from taking place are what most companies aim for. With a proper complaints plan, an organization can focus on those areas and conduct assessments as the corporate risks are ever changing.

The top rated agencies who present stable complaints procedures and policies help corporate delegates to -

Enforce latest industry trends

Technology Update for 2017

Technology Update for 2017

By David Molnar

Seeing high CPU utilization? It may not be a fault with your computer.

Does your computer stutter when browsing certain websites? Does Windows Resource Monitor show high CPU utilization? Does your Mac's Activity Monitor show your CPU being overutilized? Usually, these symptoms would indicate a computer issue that would need troubleshooting but that may no longer be the case.

Your computer could be being hijacked to mine cryptocurrency. This is referred to as cryptojacking.

An increasing number of websites are including currency mining threads that use your processor to mine for their gain. More advertising networks are being hacked to include cryptocurrency miners and more malware than ever before is now using your computer to generate revenue rather than destroy or impact your data.

Forget Bitcoin, Monero, Litecoins, Dogecoins and Feathercoin are the new kids on the block and everyone wants a piece of them.

How does cryptocurrency mining work?

Bitcoin and other digital currencies are purely theoretical. Nothing exists, no paper money, no coins, no accounts, nothing. Everything is controlled by ledgers. Those ledgers are maintained by the companies that run the currency. To protect the currency, every transaction is encrypted and as you know, encryption is very resource intensive.

To help the system work, the processing of ledgers and transactions is farmed out to other machines, such as your PC to process. Your CPU will be given an encrypted transaction to process and the tools with which to do it. Your processor completes the calculation and sends the result to the central ledger.

In consensual cryptocurrency mining, you are then paid a fixed amount per transaction. You can run these transactions persistently to mine cryptocurrency.

The trouble is, websites and malicious code are using our computers to mine cryptocurrency without our knowledge. We pay for the electricity and contend with a slow computer but get none of the benefit from it. According to the piece from Adguard linked above, 500 million computers are being used to mine cryptocurrency without their owners even being aware.

Some of the websites that feature cryptojacking code profess no knowledge of it. Given the anonymous nature of cryptocurrency, we have to take their word for it.

How to tell us a website uses cryptojacking code

There is a quick and easy way to tell if a particular website uses cryptojacking code. If your CPU utilization spikes on a particular website or page, go to a different page. If utilization drops, it is a good indication that it is cryptojacking you. You could also shut down your browser as a double check.

How to prevent cryptojacking

While not as dangerous as malware or a virus, cryptojacking is still using your computer for someone else's gain. That is not acceptable and we need to do something about that.

Your first line of defense is an adblocker. As many types of cryptojacking code are served through infected ads, a good adblocker can stop them.

Next is a good quality malware scanner. Some types of cryptojacking code are delivered through malware and will not be detectable by an adblocker. If you see CPU utilization spike, run your scanner and remove anything it finds. If you still see high utilization, run your antivirus too, just in case.

Finally, there are some browser extensions emerging designed to block all manner of cryptojacking code. Extensions such as AntiMiner, NoCoin and MinerBlock are being tested to see if they can protect your computer.

Some websites are being up front about using cryptocurrency mining to help pay the bills. These sites we have no problem with and would suggest letting them use your computer to help keep the lights on. As more of us block ads to protect ourselves, this trend is likely to continue. If the website is honest, I see no issue with it. If they try to hide it, they deserve to be blocked.

It's Show Time for Amazon Echo

It's Show Time for Amazon Echo

By George Rosenthal

Have you heard an Echo lately?

Amazon continues to expand its lineup of Echo products. The company that introduced us to Alexa now has more devices to listen to music, get news and information, and control your smart home all by simply using your voice.

First came the cylinder like Echo. It was followed up by the hockey puck-like Echo Dot. Then Amazon added video into the mix with the Echo Show. Now comes the smaller Echo Spot and the Echo Plus.

For many looking for a virtual home assistant, the question becomes should you buy an Echo and if so which one?

Those who like to watch, as well as listen, should take a front-row type look at the Echo Show.

The Show enables you to watch video flash briefings, Amazon Video and YouTube content, and make video calls to family and friends. All on a 7 inch touch screen.

You can see music lyrics, weather forecasts and your security cameras. Even create your own to-do and shopping lists.

Navigation is easy by swiping left or right. The screen also recommends some commands for Alexa if you don't know what to ask.

The 1024 x 600 screen is nearly identical to the one on the Amazon Fire 7 tablet. The text is legible but not as crisp as your smartphone or television.

The touch screen enables you to adjust settings and brightness levels. You can change a lot of things without using the Alexa app or mobile device.

In addition to the 7 inch screen the Show includes a 5 megapixel camera.

The device has an angular design. Some find it a bit clunky and liken it to a triangle with two shaved points when you look at it from the side. Overall it measures 7 x 7.4 x 4 inches and has a square foot panel facing at an angle that is slightly upward.

Eight microphones with noise cancellation are included. Amazon says you can issue commands from any direction, even while music is playing.

Like all of the Echo line you can stream music, turn on lights, set thermostats and control other compatible smart home devices.

It is easy to use. Once you plug it in it will show you available Wi-Fi networks. Pick a network and log into your Amazon account and you are ready to go.

Speakers include two, 2 inch speaker drivers for stereo audio powered by Dolby.

The Bluetooth capabilities are what many are finding as the real selling point of this device. Functioning as a Bluetooth speaker, as well as a sound source, you can pair the Show with your smartphone or tablet and play music through its speaker. You can use it with a separate Bluetooth speaker or headphones and stream audio directly out of the device itself.

Shopping is easier with the Show than with the voice only devices. Alexa adds items directly into your Amazon shopping cart and even places instant orders. The touch screen allows you to swipe through products if you cannot identify the actual product you want. However you won't be able to check your cart with the Show. You will need a computer to view or edit your cart and/or place your entire order.

Amazon continues to add more "skills" to the Alexa ecosystem such as Uber and CNN, and newer apps with more video capabilities are on the way.

Yet the Echo Show does have its limitations. While the addition of video certainly enhances the Alexa experience, sound quality may not be up to par on all music. The quality of voice and video calls are not up to the standards of Google Hangouts and Skype. Applications are limited by the Alexa-specific system.

Still the device is ideally suited for those wishing to join the ranks of Echo users or for those current fans who wish to take the Alexa experience to the next level. And now, at newly reduced prices, the Echo Show may just be the way to go.

Tips For a Contractor's License Practice Test

Tips For a Contractor's License Practice Test

By Shalini Madhav

If you are going to take a contractor license practice test, we suggest that you follow our tips. First of all, it's important to keep in mind that the exam consists of MCQs and True/False questions. However, no easy or fill-in forums are included.

Answer all the questions

If possible, you may want to answer each question on the test. If you choose to leave a question unanswered, you will miss the point for that one. Each multiple-choice question has 4 possible answers.

Identify wrong answers

In most of the questions, 2 options are clearly wrong. So, you may want to identify those options so that you can increase your chances of choosing the right one from the remaining two. This will make it easier for you to handle the MCQs part.

Follow your gut

If you were unable to eliminate at least two clearly wrong options, what would you do? In this case, your best bet is to follow your gut and choose an option that seems the right one to you. Once you have made up your mind, you should never change your mind after. It may seem tempting to choose another option, but don't do that.

Guess wisely

If you have absolutely no idea as to which one is correct, you may want to go ahead and choose the longest one. Actually, longer answers are more likely to be the correct ones because they need more explanation. So, in most cases, it is safe to choose one with the highest number of words.

Choose severe penalties

In a state exam, you won't be asked about what you may have to do or what you may get away with. In the same way, if you get a question about penalties, know that penalties won't be mild. So, it's a good idea to go for an option with the most severe penalty.

Avoid assumptions

Often, it is assumed that the correct answer may be in the middle. In other words, the correct is one is wither "B" or "C". It may have been true before the era of computers when test papers were set manually. But it doesn't work nowadays. So, it's not a good to assume that the correct answer is either "B" or "C".

Reach every question

No matter how confident you are, don't choose an answer too quickly. This is because even a single word can mean the difference between the right answer and the wrong one. So, it's better to read every question over and over again.

Math Questions

It's a good idea to do the math and estimate question at the end. This will make it easier for to do these sums as your mind won't be distracted by other questions.

Difficult questions

It's a good idea to answer hard question at the end. After all, you won't get more than one point for a difficult question, as the score for all of them is equal. The Importance Of Having A Contractor's License

The Importance Of Having A Contractor's License

By Shalini Madhav

This is the era of businesses, and what most businessmen want is profit from their investment. And that is the most important thing for any investor or entrepreneur out there. The owners of a new project send requests for quotes to a number of bidders. For instance, if an owner wants to install a new cooling tower, they may send invitations to several companies to have a look at their existing towers for easy assessment of quotes. Usually, licensed contractors are invited to bid since it's the safer route for the investors. Let's know more about the important of having a contractor's license.

In the past, the trend was to choose a bidder with the lowest bed. The purpose was to save cost while hiring the best professional. On the other hand, trends have changed in the here and now. Nowadays, low bidders don't get the license to carry out the work. In most of the states, each candidate is required to have a valid license. Aside from this, they have to be registered in order to offer their services in their area.

In most states, contractors are allowed to perform their jobs only when they are licensed. And if a professional gets caught working on a project without a license, heavy fines are imposed on both the pro and the property owner. The amount of fine can be thousands of dollars based on the value of the project. So, they are not allowed to erect or repair a tower without a valid license.

In some states, contractors are bound by law to write the license number on the bid envelopes. So, if someone places a bid without a valid license, it will be considered against the law. The procedure won't cost anything to the owner.

If you are a property owner, you can enjoy a lot of benefits by choosing a good licensed professional. First of all, you have the peace of mind that the professional is capable enough to carry out the task according to the local laws and given specifications. Aside from this, it ensures that the bidder is financial responsible. Poor financial history or poor quality of work may result in the revocation of the licensing documents. So, a non-licensed contract may not have the trust of property owner. So, getting registered is the only way to go from business point of view. You won't get as many projects as you can if you are not registered.

Here it's important to note that state inspectors take the complaints against unlicensed contractors very seriously. As soon as a claim is made, the inspector follows up to take action against the person. What they do is ask several questions in order to get a deeper insight into the matter. Aside from this, they thank the claimant for providing them with information and spur on them to keep filing the claims when needed.

So, you can see how important it is for a contractor to have a valid license.

Preparing for a contracts exam may not be easy for you. For assistance, you can check out State Exam Experts. This will make it easier for you to get your   contractors license.

The Benefits Of Creating A Corporate Board Game

The Benefits Of Creating A Corporate Board Game

By Colin Ong

In the age of mobile and virtual reality gaming, it can be quite hard to be convinced about the use of creating a corporate board game to boost strategy and team-bonding.

The board game seems to be quite out of place and meant for people who want a slower pace of life.

This is so much further from the truth.

Different Components Of The New Board Game

For example, the board can be created to highlight the current immediate fixed processes that cannot be changed in the short run. As an illustration, if you own a baking confectionary, the board can be the brand and the well-known cake offerings that your customers are expecting whenever they buy from you. Alternatively, if you run a DIY laundromat, the board can be designed tp take into account that you are using the current number of coin-operated washing-machines and dryers.

Now let's shift to the design of the playing cards, where each card can be a possible scenario that may occur in the daily running of your operations. Continuing from the case-study of a confectionary above, an example of a playing card can be a situation where your customer is asking for a change in the cake design for an upcoming wedding and you are given a very short notice to respond to this urgent request. Alternatively, you are informed that an important ingredient to make a marvellous wedding cake is out-of-stock and to respond to the chosen game card, you are supposed to propose an alternative ingredient that satisfies your customer.

Lastly, the dice can symbolise the number of days you are given to be able to solve the problem. Thus if you roll the value of 8, it can mean that you are given 8 days to change the ingredients and that you have to produce a Gantt Chart for each of the 8 days to win one round of the game.

With this simple board-game example in mind, here are some advantages to consider when your company set aside some time to design a board game.

Advantage 1: Relook The Entire Work-flow

Designing a board game has the important benefit of encouraging your entire team to relook the entire work-flow of your organisation. Every detail has to be presented for the design of the board or else it will not produce an accurate outcome.

Advantage 2: Official Vs Unofficial Work-flow

Immediately into the design stage, your team will discover that there will be a clash between an official versus an unofficial way of doing things in your organisation. This is not too difficult to understand as members of your design team will have different number of years of working experiences. Do reflect, not, reject these differences in your board game.

Advantage 3: Dynamic Environment

In the design of the cards, the entire team will draw out all the different scenarios of their dynamic working environment. This design can be further improved by getting external consultants onboard to provide futuristic insights to the environment or the introduction of commissioned market research.

Advantage 4: The Final Win

In the short run, this board game is meant as a strategic and internal communication tool. However, there will be private information and intellectual property that cannot be revealed to people outside of the organisation. It should not be played outside of your organisation premises.

Also as a learning tool, there should not be a final win in the game to reflect that the working environment is always dynamic and that there will not be a permanent winning position.

With this all in mind, enjoy building your own corporate board game!

Innovations in Temporary Lighting for Construction Sites

Innovations in Temporary Lighting for Construction Sites

By Lydia Quinn

In the old days, construction site lighting typically consisted of some bulbs and pigtails haphazardly strung along an electric wire. It was usually hung from nails pounded into sections of the construction site. Needless to say, lighting this way caused many problems. Not only was this temporary lighting difficult and often dangerous to install, it was dangerous itself, with a high risk of shock and even electrocution. This type of lighting is thankfully a thing of the past. New options in temporary construction site lighting have emerged and they have many advantages.

New construction lights are now specifically made for the job site. For example, durability is a big concern. New lights are made of LED technology, which allows for lights that last longer and give brighter light. LED's are also much smaller and lighter, making installation much easier and safer. Maintenance is also much easier due to the enhanced durability. New lights are also made to withstand the typical knocks and drops that might be experienced on a job site. Most come inside a plastic cage making the actual light bulb harder to damage. Older lights were typically hot to the touch, making them dangerous to make contact with. This risk is almost eliminated with the addition of the plastic cages and guards that today's lighting employs. The plastic cages are also impact resistant, making damage from drops, impacts, accidents and other natural or unnatural phenomena much less likely to occur.

The cables and cords that hang the lighting have also been updated, with much stronger cords that encase the actual electrical wire, making accidental cuts or frays much less likely, thereby making shocks and electrocution accidents dramatically lessened. Nowadays, temporary lights are also required to be properly grounded, especially any metal parts, and also feature overcurrent protection.

To help with hanging the lights, many temporary lighting systems come with molded cables, eyelets, stress relief ridges and PVC hangers specially made to make hanging and also removing the lights a much easier task.

Weather resistance is also incorporated into temporary jobsite lighting these days. In the past, temporary lighting on a jobsite would require the lights to be exposed to weather such as rain or even snow. This can cause significant danger, so much so that some work might be suspended during inclement weather. Not so nowadays, with the cables and lights well protected with plastic guards, molds and even waterproofing.

Will a Battery Desulfator Recover or Extend the Life of My Lead Acid Batteries?

Simple question, complicated answer.

I will try to answer as succinctly as possible.

Sulphate crystal build up has been known about since the Lead Acid battery was first invented, and this build up leads to over 70% of premature failure of lead acid batteries. However all batteries wear out over time and no device can stop that happening.

Over the last 30 years or so battery manufactures have made great strides in combatting sulphate build up and improving the life span of their batteries, by introducing changes to the construction of the battery plates, and in ideal circumstances, proper maintenance and correct charging, sulfation should not be a problem.

However we do not live in a perfect world and sulphate build up remains the major cause of battery failure.

It has been found that a controlled overcharge of the battery will break down the crystals, and if used correctly will keep the batteries in good clean condition, and extend the useful life of the battery. This method is not recommended to be used on sealed lead acid batteries (also known as AGM or VRLA batteries)

Around 20 years ago a simple device that created high voltage pulse sent to the battery was developed, called a pulse generator or desulfator. This, in practice, created the same effect as the controlled overcharge except it was not regulated, so over time these high voltage pulses damaged the battery plates. This negated the positive effect. The circuit board diagrams for this type of device are freely available on the internet and many of the low-cost devices available today are built using these designs. Short-term solution, long-term damage.

At the same time alternative solution were considered and experimentation showed that if a frequency pulse was sent to the battery it could break down the sulphate build up if the correct frequency could be achieved, however different frequencies were required for different sizes of crystal that built up on the plates. So the devices using the single frequency method were and still are, hit and miss, some work some worthless.

What was needed was a device that would work over a range of frequencies, voltages and size of battery. Until the last few years building this type of device was very expensive (in excess of $1,000) and large (the size of an old style video player). As no guarantee could be given to the end-user that sulfation was the problem with their battery no companies were prepared to develop them.

Dramatic drops in the size and cost of components has allowed companies to produce small reasonable prices products able to clean the plates of batteries of various capacities and voltages.

A small number of manufactures around the world now produce products that can clean the plates of old batteries and stop the sulphate build-up on new batteries, so recovering them or keeping new batteries clear of the build-up. In effect recovering many old batteries and extend the life of any battery that is not charged or maintained in the correct way. This is ALL they do and is the only thing responsible manufactures claim that their desulfators can do, they cannot recover batteries with any internal damage, shorted cells or AGM batteries that have dried out.

As it is not possible for suppliers to determine the condition or faults of the batteries customers intend to use the device on you should look for suppliers, who give clear information of how to test for faults within the battery, or offer a telephone or email service to help with any problems you may have with using a desulfator or with your specific battery setup.

In conclusion modern multi frequency desulfators are not a magic bullet that will repair all faulty batteries, but they can significantly extend the life of your lead acid batteries, and recover a large proportion of batteries that are sulphated and would otherwise be scrapped. This would greatly reduce you replacement battery costs, which is not insignificant on applications like solar storage batteries, ride on golf carts, fork trucks, large boats and motor homes.

9 Common Factors Driving the Freelance Economy

What will drive the Freelance Economy?

I will go out on a limb and state this: Flexible and Freelance work will gain acceptance and accelerate in volume for many years to come. The work landscape will be vastly different a generation (just over two decades) from now; Flexible and Freelance work will be a significant and perhaps dominant aspect of it from today's viewpoint. This is not new - it is likely you have heard about the brave new world of Freelance work already and Uber being used (wrongly) as the example for all things Freelance. While there is hype, there is enough good reason to believe that we are already on our way to a future as predicted above. In this article we will look at the various factors, whose interplay will favor a Flexible/ Freelance work economy. In the subsequent articles we will look at

Freelancing in technology work (forget Uber example), and  Freelance economy 2.0

What is leading us to the land of Flexible and Freelance work? We need to understand the direct and indirect causal factors in order to be prepared. Here are some key factors in play.

Automation Overheads:

Automation is leading to human work replacement in substantial numbers in manufacturing, distribution, and energy industries, through job redundancies or efficiency improvements. This will accelerate and result in the average number of work hours per person declining inexorably over the years to come. Add in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, the services and healthcare industries will see humongous job losses. Most jobs will see the hours approach part-time territory by current standards (this would seem a safe and conservative prediction when you consider more futuristic predictions of very high but prosperous unemployment - Note 1).

Reducing overheads cost through Outsourcing:

Most businesses prefer variable costs to fixed costs. Most new businesses are designed with low FC model. Payrolls are a significant portion of fixed costs for many companies and as they opportunities to convert full time workers to part-time or independents without affecting company performance, they will use it. This, combined with the well proven approach of focusing on core competencies and leaving the rest to outside entities, creates strong incentives to continue reducing full time employment commitments. The outsourcing entities are incented to increase efficiencies

Variety & Specialization:

Ease of information access, relative abundance, and pace of innovation continue to grow together, creating newer specializations all the time, across industries and knowledge spaces. Many of these specializations do not justify full-time employment in most organizations benefiting from these innovations. This means that the market for specialized freelance services will continue to grow as professionals continue mastering new knowledge areas and offer their services to those who need the same, without the constraints of employment contracts.

Cloud Mentality:

Young companies are born and continue to grow while remaining very lean; established old corporate entities are embracing the cloud mentality too preferring to rely on resources, both material and human, outside their organizations, for services that are even core to their existence. The cloud mentality signifies the willingness of organizations to collaborate with outside workers, developing models of engagement with low overheads and high innovation.

Regulations:

Developing and under-developed nations with limited labor regulations that constrain businesses (and protect labor) will be quicker in adoption and spread of flexible, freelance work structures - as alternate forms of industry self-regulation and support structures (like cooperative wage insurance, medical benefits, etc.) take hold. Contrary to what would be expected, developed nations, like ours, will be slower to adapt due to entrenched structures/ ideologies (like employer linked benefits, protectionist tendencies) and ageing population.

On Demand Information:

As it becomes easier to identify and reach what we need when we need, employers will take the best of breed approach, recruiting resources to address specific needs on an ad-hoc or planned intermittent basis. Workers/ professionals too will find it easier to reach entities that need their help and will get conditioned to holding multiple part-time engagements at the same time.

Service Intermediation:

Conveying and ensuring trust and quality for their clients are the key purposes of most organizations. Services industries have built fortunes on the basis of ensuring trust and quality (through proven business practices and capabilities) bringing together resources and clients in delivery of various services. The intermediation that assures quality and trust will gradually shift to lower overhead platforms with lesser contractual constraints, thanks to technology and collaboration. Novel forms of organizations - Note 2 will take over making part-time and freelance work easy to contract and easier to provide.

Education:

As college education continues to get costlier by the year, the demand for shorter duration programs will increase, with focus on skills that are in demand then. There will be demand for continual short-burst education/ training with newer skills getting added. Most knowledge workers will benefit from such programs by developing specialist skills in select areas.

Retraining:

There will be massive retraining needs as blue collar workers losing out to automation have to be trained in service areas; the ability of the government and society to engineer and manage such a retraining effort will both avert serious pain and pave way to newer industries and businesses that are built on part-time and freelance service labor.

Notes:

Note 1:

There are extreme predictions of most of the working-age humans being without regular employment because of automation; this also means that automation causes such abundance those humans get almost everything they need without working for it (in some form of essential social subsidy).

Note 2:

Will cover the novel forms of organizations in article #3 - Freelance economy 2.0.

Best Recruiting Practices

Best practices:

1. Current employee referrals

This source knows your business inside and out and can help shape the culture fit you are seeking in a new hire. Often time business owners fail to see their current employee pool as an asset that can bring in more of the desired hires they are seeking. Let the employees know what you are seeking and they will often have the opportunity to bring in the next great hire. Don't forget to include new hires in this process, they are often coming from their previous company and know others exploring new careers. Combining this tactic with a cash bonus or incentive is an additional way to bring in the new employees you desire.

2. Former employees

It may seem a bit unconventional but any employee who left on good terms may want to return with good terms. Staying in contact with this segment of former employees can also have the added benefit of referrals as well. In much the same way your internal employees know your business, former employees do as well.

3. New school social media

Getting hard to call this new school anymore but it now has a prolific reach that can have your hiring manager busy for weeks. Linked In remains the default professional site but Facebook, Twitter and even Instagram posts can unearth the candidates you are in need of. The Linked In route will provide the greatest insight on any potential hire but by following industry leaders on the other networks, you may come across some gems as well.

4. From within

Are the talents you are in need of, already employees? This is often the case and may still lead to the need for additional hires but you may fill a greater need immediately. This cost-effective tactic also has the added benefit of inspiring the troops knowing there are opportunities for advancement is great for moral.

5. An internship

This old school tactic can help build a pipeline of future hires while also being a goodwill gesture to your surrounding community. It can be done cost effectively but should not be done on the cheap. Make and create an environment that young future stars of your company want to engage and learn.

6. Job fairs

Again, another old school tactic that still has effective outcomes. Many community colleges host fairs on a regular basis, get it in there and display the reasons why working at your business is the best idea ever!

What Trends Will Custom Packaging See In 2017?

Marketing experts predict some global packaging trends that are going to prominent in the industry in 2017.

• Simple, bold and clear: going back to fundamentals is a trend that never dies. This year the version of simple, bold and clear is going to be more expressive and more persuasive to the customers. Using minimum elements in the package design can promote the product in a very decent way. In today's fast moving world consumers have not much time to read each and every detail given on the box? So just stick to the essential information and help the purchaser to make the right decision. A clear, clean design can convey the information and make the product shine using simplicity.

• Custom lettering: every designer loves mind grinding and to get crafty to generate some of the best work by hand. They do this practice to get the original effects in the designs. Irregular line and natural texture files can make a product stand out in comparison to the digital designs and patterns. This natural look can create a feeling of warmth to the product making it feel complete, wholesome. So in 2017, we are going to witness a comeback of custom hand lettering as a packaging trend.

• Play with colors: generally colors do stimulate emotions and affect the purchasing decisions. For this reason, choosing colors has always been one of the major decisions in packaging design. Bright and vibrant colors are going to make colorful scenes on the store shelves in 2017. We have seen that different colors are used to differentiate varieties of a product. A consumer might not remember the name or number of their favorite product, but they surely are able to recall the packaging color. All this involved a color psychology and if used properly words might not be needed in 2017.

• Using illustrations as narrative: behind every packaging design, there is a story. Customers seek out and cherish the stories which they feel close to their hearts. Using an illustration technique in packaging design can be very helpful in telling your brand story. This style can take the customer into the fantasy world. The illustration is gaining its place in industry, and in coming years are the years of carefully crafted, content rich illustrations.

• Go Vintage: packaging designs are getting popular every year through the use of new technologies and materials. Vintage designs bring back the memories of people who actually lived through that time. The success key in going vintage is to find the balance, evoke nostalgia and maintain a sharp modern look at the same time.

• Ingenious die-cuts: most traditional box designs conceal its contents, but contemporary designers are conducting experiments with die-cutting by showing the product and to use it to their advantage. If the packaging can show the product in the most meaning full and clever manner that means there are more chances that buyer would stop and take a notice of the product.

• Repeating patterns: using well-chosen and attractive patterns can make a box design from ordinary to extraordinary. The idea of repeating shapes and patterns can be simple, but it can have dynamic effects if used correctly. It doesn't matter whether the pattern is bold or playful patterns have the ability to create a strong identity of the product that customers will never forget.

• Mail delivery trend: we all remember the joy of getting something through the mail. With the advancement of transportation and communication channels that experience is lost. So this packaging trend in 2017 is here to save that feeling with an emerging postal trend. There are some manufacturers in the market who are already using this trend. They use customized stamps to make the product more authentic. This type of packaging for ice-creams, cookies, and cakes draws the attentions of the passersby. This also gives a nostalgic feeling to the customers.

• Eco-friendly Packaging: biodegradable, natural, environmentally friendly or call it whatever you like to call. But going green with packaging is the new trend that is going to hit in 2017. Further, then its positive impacts on the environment, it can save expensive and attract the customers. Multinational companies are now doing experiments with biodegradable materials to make innovative designs for their products. One of the manufacturers of bottles sells bottles made with ocean plastic. Now more and more consumer brands are going green in packaging designs and this is the only trend we hope to see grow and sustain in every year to come because it benefits all.

• Reuse and recycling: sustainability is always the central topic of any project. With the emerging trend of using biodegradable and eco-friendly materials concept of reusing and recycling is also a fast growing trend. The concept of "reuse" consist multipurpose packaging design that gives a second life to all the boxes. A life beyond just to be a product box.

With all the discussed packaging trends in mind, we can say that trends in the packaging industry in 2017 design should be simple and must add authenticity and meaning to the product. Both companies and private individuals also realize that product that communicates a clear and persuasive message to consumers enhances their confidence with ultimately leads them to purchase that product. Trends come and go and come back yet again, but they are the most impactful communication use we can use in branding our product.

4 Types Of Earphones

If you are looking for headphones, did you know that there are very many kinds of headphones in the market that you can purchase? The most common types are:

Earbuds

These are simply large circles that press against your ear. When you wear them, they rest on the outer ear-they don't enter the ear canal. This feature allows them to leak sound from the external environment to get into the ear.

The earphones are loved by many people as they are compact and easy to carry around. While they are great, their main flaw is that they allow noise to enter your ear thus you don't receive good quality music that you deserve. They also tend to hurt the ear especially when you wear them for a long time.

In-ear earphones

Some people argue that these units are similar to the earbuds, but this isn't the case. These pieces get inside your ear canal thus blocking noises from the outside. In addition to this, they are comfortable as they are often made from soft materials. The pieces are also light thus you can easily travel with them.

Just like any other pieces, they come with their negatives. Their major flaw is that they are delicate; therefore, they easily get damaged. This requires you to be very cautious when handling them.

On-ear

On-ear headphones sit right over your outer ear. When you wear them, they cover your ear canals rather than the entire ear. Their most identifying feature is a closed back thus you are able to listen to the music better. The units are also lightweight thus you can easily travel with them. In fact, some of the brands pack them with packing bags making it even easier to go with them.

While they are great units to have, they often feature a foam padding on the ear-cups that tends to get moist when your ears sweat. While you can use them both indoors and outdoors, they provide poor noise isolation when you use them outdoors. If you use them for a long time, they cause ear irritation.

Over ear

From their name, these units cover the entire ear. Due to this, they reduce noise pollution. They keep the sound you are listening to in thus you are able to get maximum results. In addition to maintaining the music in the ear, they are also very comfortable. In fact, some models feature cups made from velvet that don't crunch your ears.

The main flaw with the units is that they are usually heavier than most of the other models in the market. Due to this, they cause fatigue when you wear them for extended periods of time.

Conclusion

These are some of the most common types of earphones that you can buy. The ones that you go for depends on your needs and preferences. If you travel a lot, you should go for the light versions. On the other hand, if you stay in the house most of the time, go for the bulky ones. To make the most from the units, ensure that you buy those of high quality.

Spin Around a Damaged Tire to Make It Useful

Various parts of a car are recycled by an auto dismantler. An auto dismantler sells the functional parts, restores those that can be repaired and sells them. There are some parts such as worn out tires which need to be carefully disposed of as they are voluminous. They are also constituted in such a manner that they are not bio-degradable.

Tires of a car are designed to be long-lasting. But when they reach the end of life i.e. when they are worn out or damaged they can be detrimental to the environment. Hence, their safe disposal is essential.

Let us see how discarded tires impact the environment:

• The number of tires discarded annually is quite large. And, each tire occupies a lot of space. If tires are abandoned they will occupy a lot of space.
• They damage landfill liners and promote the growth of rodents.
• They take about 50-60 years to decompose completely in a landfill.
• Landfill liners are damaged by tires and these contaminate soil and water.
• Discarded tires trap methane making it buoyant. It then bubbles to the surface adversely affecting landfill liners.

Some years back nothing could be done regarding the abandoned tires. But fortunately, now there are recycling methods available through which tires are converted into useful material for other applications.

Some of the recycling methods used are:

Ambient shredding

It entails shredding a tire into small pieces using a knife at room temperature.

Cryogenic grinding

In this case, liquid nitrogen is used to freeze the tire at sub-zero temperature. This causes changes in the physical properties of the tire making it brittle. The tire is then placed in an enclosure and it is shredded using hammers.

Recycled tires find numerous applications:

1. Cement Manufacturing:

Old tires are extensively used as an alternative fuel in the manufacture of Portland cement.

2. Recycled rubber is used for manufacturing a number of products:

• Soil additives
• Synthetic Turf
• Stall Mats for horses
• Backdrops for shooting ranges
• Jogging tracks
• Floor mats for gyms
• Covers for playgrounds
• Rubberized asphalt
It is being used on a large-scale for constructing pavements, etc instead of traditional asphalt.

Hence, we see that modern technology has introduced methods such as recycling which benefit the environment. By recycling a tire we are not only protecting our environment but also creating various useful products in a cost-effective manner.

Essentials for Construction Site Safety

No matter the type of construction your company is involved in, there can be many potential hazards on the jobsite that can result in injury, and in extreme cases, even death. In addition, any safety mishaps on the jobsite can cause downtime, additional expenses and even cause your company to miss important deadlines. So, it's critical to give your workers some basic guidelines to follow at all times when they are on the jobsite. Here are some essential safety tips to keep you and your workers safe on the jobsite.

Visibility can be a critical issue on job sites. Make sure you give your workers the proper accessories needed to make sure they are easily visible to any crane or machinery operators and also to other workers in the area. Ear and eye protection is also important, such as hearing protection headsets and safety glasses. Vests are a common site on construction sites nowadays, and they should include bright colors.

Many times, structures involved in building are not secured properly until late in the process. Be sure to anchor any temporary or unsecured structures while the building process is still taking place. Workers should also be equipped at all times with proper safety gear such as hard hats and fall protection equipment and accessories.

Often on a construction site, there may be temporary heat, water, gas or electricity lines open to the job site. It's critical that all workers know where these areas are and how to move around them. Live electrical wires should never be left exposed.

Machinery and tractors are often used on job sites, it's important to check the maintenance on these machines before every use, but especially their safety measures, such as lighting and sound warnings. Your workers should always be reminded to be on the lookout for moving machinery that is in use.

Many times, temporary workers may be on the job site, such as workers installing a device or decoration that may only take a few hours or a day. It's critical to let these workers know the basics of safety on the jobsite before they are let into it.

Slipping and falling is a common problem on job sites. Workers can fall off of ladders, scaffolding or uneven surfaces. They might also trip on the many machines and cords that can run through a job site. Make sure proper warnings are posted around the site to watch their step, and make sure all workers have proper foot wear for the particular environment that they are working in.

No matter how careful you and your workers are, accidents can still happen on a job site. Equipment can fail without warning, or the weather, such as wind, rain or even a natural disaster such as an earthquake or flood may cause an accident on the site. This is why it is critical to have an emergency plan for when something happens.
