Good Looks & Modeling - Is This Really Important After All?

She walked into the packed model call and couldn't help but notice all of the beautiful faces staring back at her. As she signed in she quietly kept to herself before taking a quick peek around the room as she began to compare herself to others.

This is one of the most common mistakes that unsigned models make when they are first starting out in the business. Some call it human nature but I like to call it the recipe for disaster.

Did you know that only 4% of women around the world consider themselves beautiful (up from 2% in 2004). This is heartbreaking and I believe is largely due to the images we see on television and in magazines that are illusions. That's right. What is not enhanced by a model's glam squad is most certainly caught in the edit department courtesy of retouching. Don't believe me, check out this video.

The Real Truth About Good Looks Exposed
Let me ask you a question.

Have you ever looked in a magazine and saw someone and thought wow they're not that attractive how in the world did they become a model? The answer is quite simple beauty is in the eye of the beholder and that person most likely exudes confidence and knows how to show a range of characters in front of the camera. They are marketable which means dollars and cents and very happy repeatable clients.

Modeling isn't all about looks. There are so many models who have very unique features who have done quite well as a model.

Take a look at this article 20 Female Models Who Are Not As Good Looking As Everyone Thinks and tell me what you think.

It used to be that you were a model because you hit the genetic lottery according to model Cameron Russell. Now being good-looking is common to the degree that if you don't like something on your body no big deal, you can get it fixed.

Where does this lead us? We have a bunch of good-looking people walking around who believe just because they are attractive that means they can model which is the farthest from the truth.

What Truly Matters If It's Not How You Look
If you want to separate yourself from other attractive models and stand out here are my top 3 ways to do it.

1. Confidence not to be confused with being arrogant.
When you walk into a room hold your head up high like you own the place. When you're confident if shows from head to toe and you are a people magnet. Things gravitate towards you because of it. A casting director will likely chose the person who is confident and messes up during an audition versus the person who relies heavily on their looks and looks like a deer in headlights on camera. Ashley Graham is picture perfect confident and is taking the plus size industry by storm. She owns her look and is comfortable in her own skin. Master this and you will crush it.

2. Acting is no longer just for actors.
Before you say but I don't want to be an actor understand this, successful models these days are not boring. They know how to work the camera and can show ranges of emotion and characters. The models that do this get booked over and over again. Photographers love working with these types of models because they don't have to tell them what to do and they will make them look good. Dubbed the Queen of Posing Coco Rocha knows how to do this all too well. This might be intimidating for the model who is just focused on her looks. So consider taking basic acting classes just for facial expression and movement if you want to win.

3. Understanding the Business is critical.
Wanna shorten the learning curve quickly? Learn as much as you can before you get into the business. There's way more involved than just smiling and having your picture taken. This is a business and if you don't know what you're doing you will find out the hard way and it will take you much longer which usually leads to unsigned models giving up and quitting.

Mirror Mirror on the Wall you're the fairest of them all. Stop focusing on your looks. You have the goods. Instead concentrate on boosting your confidence, getting involved in acting and understanding the business. You possess a special quality that no one else has. Own it!
