When applying for a job, we all know that presentation is crucial. Nevertheless, although we understand the necessity of dressing smartly for an interview, many of us will neglect to apply the same level of care to our application documents.
If you know that you come across well in person, but are unsure how you look on paper, you may need a little help with your cover letter - especially if you're applying for the job of your dreams and want to be top of the pile.
Many people dismiss the cover letter, choosing to apply more focus to their CV. But it's important to remember that whoever is considering your application will pick this up first, often before so much as glancing at your CV, so this is the place to really sell yourself.
While there are many ways to do this, bad presentation may prevent you from getting the consideration you deserve. Employers at of top firms will undoubtedly receive hundreds of applications from similarly qualified candidates, so will only consider those that stand out and make a good impression.
Of course, the content you write must be legible, literate, and compelling if you want to set yourself apart from other applicants - but the very first impression you will make is though the presentation of your paperwork.
It should also go without saying that your application should be printed on good quality paper, unfolded and placed in an envelope with the company's name or contact details on the front, even if you're handing it to them in person. But you also need to consider the piece's format.
Formatting is where a lot of candidates become unstuck. In a world where e-mail and social media are our primary methods of communication, the last time you had to type an actual letter was probably in school. But you don't need to go foraging back through your school books to get this right; as ever, the internet is full of information which can help you.
There are a range of resources available on the web, including websites designed to give candidates insights into the requirements of specific applications with renowned firms. Some sites will even display successful applications and interview details, so you can acquire some in-depth knowledge as to what's expected.
You'll usually have to pay a small fee to become a member of one of these sites, but it is well worth the investment - even if it only helps you secure one great role. There are also sites that will provide you will free templates for covering letters, which will give you a great indication of where to start.
If you're copying a template from the internet, or using an online tool, be sure not to make this obvious to an employer. Industry professionals will spot somebody else's work a mile off, so make sure the written content is all your own work, and you haven't just reworded something you found on the internet.
If you struggle with spelling, why not search online for a proof-reader who can get your application up to scratch? Alternatively, you may be able to ask family or friends to help you. Either way, you want to spend some time thinking about both the content and layout of your covering letter to make sure you're presenting yourself in the best possible light.
Last but not least, sign off with your full name and contact details. A covering letter should normally include your phone number, e-mail address and home address - the latter is so they can write to you in person if that's how the company operates, but also to see how local you are and how conveniently you could get to work, so it's important to include it.
