Why Effective Leaders Must Face REALITY

How often have you heard someone discuss the need for a positive attitude, or complaining about someone's negativity? Have you observed there is often a somewhat, fine line, between a true, meaningful, positive attitude, and one who merely uses words/ rhetoric, in a rose - colored glasses, manner? I refer to this, as needing an attribute, referred to, as pragmatic idealism (or, perhaps, simply, remaining open - minded, with a can - do attitude)! In one's quest to remain open to alternatives, without bias or prejudgment, it is also essential, to keep a firm hold, on what is actually happening. A true leader cannot proceed with blinders on, but rather must be ready, willing and able, to remain open - minded and objective, while facing REALITY.

1. Reasonable; relevant; realistic: How will you maintain this reasonable, necessary balance? What are reasonable expectations and goals? How far should one reach, in order to maximize his efforts? Unless one is realistic about his organization's past/ heritage, present challenges, future needs, and mission, and brings a realistic, yet compelling vision, he will be challenged to be as effective as he needs to be!

2. Empathy; energy; excellence: Will you assume others view your goals and ideas as you do, or do you realize their expectations and perceptions might differ? Will you proceed with the highest level of empathy, and move ahead, proactively, to address needs, priorities and concerns, and clearly articulate your ideas and goals? Are you willing to overly compromise and seek popularity (as your main objective), or proceed with excellence, consistently?

3. Attitude: The difference in attitude, nearly always is the most significant factor! It is not enough to simply respond, "Never better," when someone asks how you are, but one must believe it, and seek to improve, on a regular basis! There have been few leaders who have succeeded and/ or been effective, who failed to consistently proceed, with a true, positive attitude, combined with a realistic understanding of circumstances and events! True leaders understand facts, perceptions, needs, concerns and priorities, and articulate their ideas, in a motivating, positive manner!

4. Listen; learn: Will you dedicate more time and effort, to speaking, or will you speak less, and listen more? Will this be merely hearing, or effective listening? Will you consistently learn from what you see, hear and observe, and proceed to address issues, as others perceive them?

5. Ideas; ideology; imagination: Will you introduce new and/ or improved ideas, which are based on a positive, needed, ideology? Will you limit yourself to the restraints of your personal comfort zone, or will you proceed with imagination and understanding?

6. Timely: How will you prevent the dangerous tendency to procrastinate, in order to attempt to avoid either failure or perceived risks? Only if an individual realizes what the concerns and needs are, and then proceeds in a timely, well - considered manner, will he become an effective leader!

7. You: Real leaders realize they must work with others effectively, but that they can only be truly responsible for their own actions! It's always up to you!

Keep your eyes wide - open, but be willing to consider alternatives! Face REALITY, and proceed effectively!
