The Climate Of Punjab

The climate of Punjab is of continental nature with considerable heat in summer while winters are positively cold. Punjab can be divided into three distinct climate Regions.

The Climate Of Plain Regions
The climate of plain regions is very hot in summers and quite cold in winter. In summers the temperatures of over 104 F are quite common and hot air continues to blow most of the time. The rainfall is meager and mostly occurs in the rainy season that is quite short -about 6 weeks to two months

Winters are mild and weather is clear with the exception of western disturbance- an extra tropical rain bearing system- that visits this area after every two weeks or so and gives moderate rainfall. The temperatures are also pleasant and day time high usually does not exceed 75 F. While night time low is typically 40 F.

The Climate Of The Mountains
The climate of the mountains of Punjab follow the same thermo hygro regime as that of the plains. The only difference is that in these Region the summers are quite moderate with day time temperatures exceed 90 F very rarely even at the height of summer and the temperatures of the order of 80 F is the norm. The rainy season has the same length but the rain is both greater in amount and intensity,

The winters here are bitterly cold with night time lows falling to as low as 20 F. The snow fall is heavy and also the result of western disturbance as discussed above.

The Climate Of Western Dry Lands
Th western dry land, for most part, consists of desert or semi desert with little or no vegetation. The climate is extreme both in summer and winter months. The rainfall is very scanty both in summer and winter, In summer, it is usual to record temperatures as high as 122 F at mid-day. In winters temperatures as low as 32 F are not uncommon.

In short, the climate of Punjab is of continental nature with phenomenal differences between summer and winter temperatures. The best period to visit Punjab Plains and dry areas is fro November to February while if one has an intention to visit the mountainous region, the best season is from April to June ( before heavy monsoon rains set in ) and from mid September to mid November ( before heavy snow fall and extreme winter conditions set in).
