Turn Your Passion Into Your Job

We have all heard the clich before: choose a job you love and you'll never work a day in your life. It's been a whimsical philosophy, painted on billboards, engraved in wooden signs that you'd see in gift store windows. This phrase is easy to dismiss because, well, of course we want to work a job that we love. Who wouldn't want that? If it were realistic and practical to attain, everybody on the planet would turn their passion into their career.

Just to make myself clear, I'm not here to tell you that this philosophy is unattainable. Quite the opposite; I want to shed light on the negative discourse suggesting that following your passion is not realistic.

The first step is asking yourself "How can I make a career out of what I feel most passionate about?" It's important to identify not only your dream job, but how you can deliver the most good and make your impact reach its full potential. Identifying your passion is half the battle. When you do what you love, the ultimate reward will be your happiness and satisfaction. Like anything we do in life, we must work hard to get to where we want to be. This means that once you figure out what kind of career you can make out of your passion, you should be willing to work hard for it.

Next, you need to set goals for yourself and apply those goals to a timeline. Your biggest goal will be maximizing the potential of your career developed from your passion. To achieve that, milestones should be set in order to work your way up to that final goal. Think about what skills you can use to put your name out there and gather some experience in your desired field. Each milestone met during this journey will be gratifying contribution to your overall goal.

Whether it be volunteer work, offering services, or crafting your own goods, you need to be willing to put in ample overtime to reroute your career. It may take even take several years, but that timeframe is incomparable to a lifetime of uncertainty and regret. I'm telling you to work extra hard so that, eventually, you won't feel like you're working at all. Too many people shut out the idea of following their passion because of finances, education, fear of taking risks, or any number of excuses. You can't waste your entire life wondering what you could have done better and you shouldn't be afraid to take risks that will only boost your quality of life.

It is possible to create your dream job in unique and unexpected ways. Maybe you have a passion to travel the world, but your experience is strictly tied to retail sales. In this case, you could consider designing the products that you sell in stores or offering services that assist people in how to use these products. In theory, you've turned yourself into a specialist with your own business, allowing you to take that experience to a global platform where there will always be communities around the world who can benefit from your expertise. You've indirectly followed your passion by getting creative with your skillset. Never be afraid to manipulate the system a bit.

It's time to begin doing what you love and forming your life around being the best person that you can be. When you truly love your work, your passion transcends into your work ethic and benefits the markets in which you operate. It's a trickle-down philosophy that your happiness just may positively impact the happiness of those who are surrounded by you.
