You Are Bound to Get Old - Why Not Age Successfully?

Andy Rooney once remarked "It's paradoxical that the idea of living a long life appeals to everyone, but the idea of getting old doesn't appeal to anyone." He is perhaps a strong advocate of the concept of "successful aging." To elaborate this concept, it is nothing but living a disease-free and independent life. Of course, if you are able to command respect in the society also, it is all the more valuable.

Everyone fears the negative impact of the physiological changes that take place due to aging. But the good news is that you can reduce this negative impact by doing regular exercises. Apart from keeping age-related ailments at bay, you can preserve vitality as well.

If you observe the life of sports people and athletes, you will find that they lead a healthy life even after hanging their boots. They continue doing their exercises regularly even after retirement and this helps them keep fit even when they reach their 60's or even 70's. This is what is known as successful aging.

Researchers have proved that regular exercises can conserve the muscle mass and strength even in aged people. The cardiovascular system of these people will also function at its optimum efficiency. This means that it is not aging but lack of physical activity that triggers the negative impact of the physiological decline in aged people.

It is not necessary that you must exercise like professional athletes and sports people. Even if you do less intense exercises on a consistent basis, it will do a world of good for maintaining good health. But finding the right type as well as quantum of exercises is important for successful aging and for lowering the risks of diseases. It should not be like "falling from the pan into the fire" because doing wrong exercises and exceeding your limits may cause more harm than good.

Not only that, aged people should adopt an integrated approach in their efforts to age successfully. This means they should be clear about things like having the right amount of sleep, getting the required doses of nutrients and leading a stress-free life in order to succeed in their efforts.

Remember that it is never late to put in place an appropriate exercises regimen. Experts say that the initial goal should be to stick approximately to 3 hours of physical activity every week. You can gradually increase the duration but you should guard against falling a prey to "peer pressure" and increasing your activities to levels you cannot withstand.

Not only that, your exercises regimen should consist of cardio exercises that may increase your heart rate as well as those activities that make your muscles work harder. Similarly, activities that impart flexibility into your joints should also find a place in your regimen. If you consistently follow such a regimen, you can certainly maintain good health till the end. This is what successful aging is all about.
