A Different Type Of Cloud

We have all heard of the Cloud but some of us still have no idea just what it is, exactly. Is it software? Is it an application? Is it a program of some sort? Just what is the Cloud?

The first thing to know is that it isn't one thing, but rather a network of servers and each server has a function. Some deliver a service like Netflix. Some are used to store data or pictures like in the case of Instagram. Whatever you do on social media, whether it be a status update on Facebook or a streak in Snapchat you are using the Cloud, so many are actually using it without ever knowing what it is or where it comes from.

In fact, any time you upload or store data of any sort without using your computer's internal data, you are using the Cloud. What is good about it is that you can then access your information from any device, because all you need is an internet connection. This makes your information more available and from anywhere at any time, for example, you don't have to be at home sitting in front of your laptop to see those pictures you just recently uploaded. You can check them while in a line waiting to pay for groceries, at school, at the doctor's office or on the bus, just as long as you have an internet connection, you are good to go.

This is all possible because the Cloud is internet based. This means that companies that used to have to their own hardware and who had to replace that hardware when it wore our or became too slow can now simply pay for use on the Cloud and be on their way. This saves businesses thousands of dollars each year. It is a great way to store non-sensitive information like shopping lists or photos because it is easily accessible later. You don't want to put anything sensitive on the Cloud though because it may be able to be accessed by others, even though there are security measures in place. Better to be safe than sorry.

This idea has really taken off, so much so that there are some computers on the market that don't even have built in memory, as anything done on them will be stored on the Cloud. This makes the machines inexpensive and makes a great alternative for students.
