What Ever Happened To Public Fiscal Responsibility? 5 Examples

By Richard Brody

America, often, becomes significantly weaker, when elected officials, proceed, with a populist message, focused on empty promises, and rhetoric, without considering the fiscal, financial, and/ or economic needs, and ramifications. While nations may accumulate deficits, and generally do, in the long - run, it often compromises, their true sustainability, and abilities to face the future, in the best, most sustainable manner! The discussion, often, becomes little more than politics - as - usual, versus other directions, while it should be focused on the needs, priorities and goals, of citizens! To become relevant, it would be helpful, if our political leaders, recognized, financial decisions, generally has ramifications, and they should, seek, to proceed, with the maximum, bang - for - the - buck! While everyone wants to pay less tax, and keep more of their money, there must be a balance between our personal desires, with the public, and/ or common - good! We are presently witnessing a period, where the politics of so - called, tax cuts/ reforms, has been emphasized by President Trump, and his supporters, while seeming to deny, the possible, dire ramifications, of extensive deficits. With that in mind, this article will attempt to briefly examine, discuss, and review, 5 examples.

1. Ramifications of tax cuts/ tax reforms: Mr. Trump, and his party's leaders, has articulated a message, they passed a piece of legislation, which priorities, its benefits, to the middle - class. They are telling us, by offering corporations, significant tax cuts, they will automatically hire more people, and offer more benefits and pay, to existing employees. However, the history of Trickle Down Economics, has indicated, this isn't always the case, and, in fact, generally has not! Economists state, the wealthiest 1% of the population, possess more than 60% of the wealth, before this legislation, and nearly all of them, state, it will provide the bulk of its benefits to these wealthiest individuals! While the politicians have structured this, in such a way, to provide some short - term relief to the middle - class (although about 30% will be paying even more), these benefits expire in about 7 years, while the corporate benefits, are permanent. The argument is, how much it will increase the deficit by, and, the rhetoric of many of the Republican leaders, makes many, believe, and/ or expect, they will come back, after Social Security and Medicare.

2. Need for zero - based budgeting: A zero - based budget, evaluates needs, priorities and goals, and rather than merely tweaking the budget, from one year, to the next, seeks the most bang - for - the - buck, by thoroughly considering, actual needs, and ramifications! Unfortunately, we have not witnessed political leaders, ready, willing, and/ or able, to do so, in many years!

3. Priorities/ goals: Shouldn't the proposals of public leaders/ officials, be based on the priorities, goals, etc, of the citizens, rather than their self - interest, and/ or personal agenda?

4. Relevant: Beware of anyone, in an elected office, who resorts to blaming and complaining, about the past, rather than emphasizing the most relevant needs, solutions, and priorities!

5. Sustainability: America elected an individual, to the highest position of the land, who has attempted to, tear - down, and/ or deny, the sustainable challenges, etc! When we ignore the environment, energy needs/ possibilities. alternatives, and/ or the amount of the federal debt, we risk far - reaching, negative impacts, on the future of the environment, America's fiscal strengths, etc.

America needs true leadership, which is fiscally responsible and responsive, as well as relevant and sustainable! Donald Trump appears to, either, not really care about these implications/ ramifications, or is in - denial!
