PersonalGrowth :7 Benefits of Reading the Bible

By Stephanie Harbin

Much has been said about reading the Bible. On one hand some say that you cannot understand it. On the other, persons claim that it has no relevance. Consequently, I've reaped a lot from reading the Bible, and this article presents some of the harvest.

Faith

Reading the Bible increases your faith, especially when you read it aloud. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing, and hearing. Like when you go to church and hear a sermon that speaks to your heart; you get encouraged.

A previous article shared how I saturated myself in the Word after the death of my husband. Although I'd like to tell you that this was part of some special spiritual quest, nothing is further from the truth. Simply put, I was trying to avoid losing my mind.

But in the process something occurred which affected my language and behavior. Faith came. As a result, when stuff happened (as it will as long you live) I was shaken but not shattered. There's a difference.

Relationship

Imagine seeking a connection with a person who avoids spending time with you. Nevertheless, the Creator delights in spending time with you. Reading the Bible along with prayer deepens the relationship. You hunger for more, and at length gain a relationship that's beyond your wildest dream. But because you have a freewill, He does not force himself on you.

Wisdom

Accordingly wisdom is the principle thing and the Bible brims with it. Let's take the book of Proverbs. It contains 31 short chapters that give insight on issues like money management, raising children, marriage, business, pride, leadership, and more.

Peace

Why is this important? I don't know about you, but I can't function or make good decisions when I feel unsettled or anxious. Being anxious leads you to desperate things, and I'm not desperate for anything.

When I'm having a tough day, and nothing seems to be clicking, I need to reconnect to the source. Then, everything gets calm. Reading the Bible gives you a comfort that surpasses understanding.

Love

The Bible is the book of love, and love conquers all. When I grew up, you attended church every Sunday. Even if you didn't want to be there you were still being touched by love because God is love; you sat there not realizing that open heart surgery was being performed.

Success

I don't know anyone who strives to fail. No one wakes up and says, "Today I'm destined to become the biggest loser on the planet". On the contrary, people want to succeed, and the Bible is the greatest success book ever written. It covers everything under the sun. What's interesting is how you can be reading something unrelated to your struggle yet get direction on how to handle it.

Moral Compass

Lastly, reading the Bible provides a moral compass to live by. Now everything is so backwards. Left means rights and right means left. Anything goes. The Bible, however, keeps me centered regardless of what everyone else around me is doing.
