Today, perhaps more so, than, at any time, in recent memory, we are witnessing a dearth of ethics, in our elected, public officials! While, politicians, have often, been considered, in a less than favorable light and manner, we are presently experiencing a period, where there seems, to be, very little effort, towards being ethical, and behaving, likewise! Why are we witnessing, so little ethics, in those, we elect, to serve and represent us? Are, our American freedoms, and liberties, which are the very core, and essence of our democracy, being threatened, by this unethical behavior, and why do they appear to be, under siege? With that in mind, this article will attempt to review, and consider, 5 possible considerations.
1. Conflicts of Interests: The American political system, involves, a far longer, more expensive and extensive, campaign period. Perhaps, because, many prefer to vote for someone, who tells them, what they want, and hope to hear, and possesses/ shares their biases and prejudices, rather than, the most qualified individual, who has a viable vision, and emphasizes solutions, we (the American electorate), are responsible, for the monster, we've created. Constant blaming and complaining, and having many conflicts of interest, are, the antithesis, of what we need, and deserve! When Donald Trump was elected President, about a year, and a half ago, he refused to take the measures, previous Presidents have, which is, to put financial holdings, in a blind - trust, and thus, there have been many instances, which either, were actual conflicts, or, at least, provided the optics, of being a conflict!
2. Optics: This administration, either, seems, to not care, or doesn't consider and/ or recognize, the impact, how things appear, often referred to as, the optics, are relevant and significant. Perhaps because Mr. Trump, according to political fact - checkers, has made mis - statements, and/ or told lies, at a record - setting, over 6 times, per - day, the public, has become tired of the process. He recognizes, and seems to believe, his core political supporters/ base, will support him, regardless of the ethics, involved!
3. Lies; mis - statements: Many defend these times, and office - holders, by saying, politicians lie, yet, that does not excuse today's current state of affairs! When lying becomes an acceptable state of affairs, democracy loses!
4. Common good, versus, self - interests/ personal political agenda: We elect the office - holders, so shouldn't they prioritize serving and representing us, and American ideals, and liberties, for the common good, rather than their self - interests, and/ or personal, political agenda?
5. Party politics over policy: On nearly every piece of legislation, in the past year, we have witnessed, partisan politics, at - its - worst! Shouldn't quality policy, and serving our common, best interests, be the focus, over party politics, and/ or self - interests?
There is so little ethical behavior, in today's political leaders! Wake up, America, and hold those, you elect, responsible!
