Education Can Change The World

By Gary G Sweet

Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." - Nelson Mandela

Ask anyone who has transformed their life, from one of uneducated job seeker to job seeker with a degree, about how much education changed their life and chances are they'll tell you it changed them forever. Knowledge has that kind of power.

The power of knowledge redefines personal boundaries, shatters invisible walls and creates upheaval in geopolitical realms. It spawns wisdom, the great equalizer. Education is the cornerstone of positive change and the ignition spark of evolution. It's no wonder those in positions of power, privately or politically, cringe at the thought of an educated workforce or populace.

The genesis of intelligence is information, whether gathering it as an individual or in a group of any size. Engaged learning should be a lifelong affair undertaken for the continuous acquisition of knowledge and practical application. Acquiring wisdom can easily become a habit, especially when introduced to children early in childhood.

Study Habits Start Young

Studies have consistently shown "... learning from experience, particularly for young children, is always more powerful than learning through instruction," according to Dr. David Whitebread and Dr. Sue Bingham from the University of Cambridge. "Many fundamental processes which underpin thinking, reasoning and learning are fully functioning at birth or become available within the first 4-5 years of life."

Based on these and similar findings, developing a habit of 'conscious knowledge gathering' is a readily acquired tendency, a genetic gift, preprogrammed in humans for utilization throughout life. It would naturally follow then, that existing in an educated state of mind is a 'fundamentally natural part of our DNA, and not to do so interrupts our natural evolution as a species'.

We Are Born Inquisitive

We are curious by nature. We are meant to learn. Our brain is the most complex object in the known universe and soaks up knowledge as fast as it comes in. Understanding and triggering the brain's ability to process information so rapidly and effectively, has been a source of fascination and subject of study since humans could consciously think.

With all the distractions of modern living, the natural course of knowledge accumulation - education - has become fractured and disrupted. 'Learning to learn' is now a concentrated area of ongoing research as the issues of daily living increasingly interfere with our instinctive craving for wisdom and enlightenment.

Students Must Be Engaged

The creation of high-quality, 21st-century learning environments has garnered renewed interest in academic circles as the fabric of public education continues to change and redefine itself. In the wake of today's social, economic and political flux, our educational system and institutions must reflect the importance of engaging students, as much as they work toward instilling knowledge. This is especially important in disadvantaged communities across the country.

As the challenges of moving forward as a species evolve in today's ever-faster current of life, along with the technological advances impinging every aspect of our daily existence, possessing the innate ability to learn is easily the most important trait humans can collectively utilize and nurture.

We are obligated to constantly examine the educational tools at our disposal that enable us to catapult society into the future, and away from outdated mechanisms of learning which hinder our ability to efficiently gather knowledge. Engaging students and adults in Interactive Technology environments, has proven to be one of the most effective means of knowledge transference available to educators.

Positive change is not only something we can talk about, it is something we can accomplish through education. The world, as we know it, has given us the gift of knowledge to enhance our gift of life. All we have to do is learn how to harness our intelligence to repay it.
