3 Reasons Why Autonomous Vehicles Will Be Here Sooner Rather Than Later

3 Reasons Why Autonomous Vehicles Will Be Here Sooner Rather Than Later

By Jacob K. LePretre

In today's fast moving world, technology and new inventions are popping up every day, making life easier on us. The auto industry is no different. We have seen this industry progress very quickly in the past few years. Seeing the invention of electric vehicles, more efficient vehicles and now including the amount of autonomous safety features, the question is often brought up, what will the auto industry look like in ten years? Here are three reasons why autonomous vehicles will be here sooner rather than later.

1. Humans are bad drivers. If the industry moves to being 100% autonomous or self-driving, the need for us human drivers would be completely eliminated. This would bring down accidents and auto related fatalities nearly by 100%. While it is hard to imagine no drivers on the road, it makes sense when we see how safe these autonomous vehicles can keep us. Not all drivers are bad, but in today's technologically driven world almost everyone you see will have a smartphone in their hand or pocket. And the same goes for while they are behind the wheel. These smartphones allow drivers to become easily distracted which results in accidents and injuries, often deadly.

2. Technology is making us more comfortable. Technology arguably runs our lives. It surrounds us and makes our daily lives easier. The same goes for autonomous vehicles and their technologies. These new safety features have come around so quickly and the art has been perfected. It is almost impossible to find a new car without some sort of autonomous safety feature. Anything from voice control, rear-view cameras, automatic parking and automatic braking you can expect to see. As these additions become even more common and present in our driving experiences, we will get more comfortable and used to them. And once we realize the ease and safety that these features provide, we won't look back.

3. Everyone can be apart of the autonomous industry. From young children to old grandparents or those with a disability, anyone can use these autonomous driving services. The safety and ease of use of these self-driving vehicles will allow anyone to get to their destination, even if you were not able to physically drive regardless of the reason. This will make transportation easier and safer, especially for the disabled and elderly community. These self-driving vehicles will gives us more freedom, independence and options for everyone. Imagine your next road trip not having to worry about driving, directions or how your grandparent might get there.

The use and addition of autonomous vehicles into the industry would be huge. Creating safer roads, more opportunity and a better industry. While this change may not happen for another 10 years, once we get a taste of the autonomous industry we will never look back.

Working From Home As a Self-Published Writer

Working From Home As a Self-Published Writer

By Phil Andrews

There have always been creative people, but the rapid advance of information technology and mass communications means the opportunities now exist to announce our creativity to the world like never before. Whether you are a musician or a still life artist, a songwriter or a graphic designer, there is a vehicle out there through which to share your work with your intended audience at the click of a button on a search engine.

Probably no area of creative expression has been so revolutionised by recent technology as that of the written word. Writers, even some very good ones, have long been hostages to the whim of the traditional publisher, whose instinct to discard the blood and sweat of those seeking to make a living by getting their life's work into print so that somebody, somewhere might have the opportunity to appreciate it at times seems almost gratuitous. The list of major works, some of them even classics, which were initially rejected by publishers is long and would still be growing - were it not for the timely arrival on the scene of Print on Demand, or self-publishing.

There is No Minimum Requirement

Self-publishing is fairly much what it says on the tin. First you write a book, then you upload it, then it appears on a publishing platform such as Amazon for anybody to buy and read. Some platforms such as Amazon's own CreateSpace provide templates to assist with the formatting process or with such things as cover design but, for better or worse, the finished product is your own. Modern print technology enables the publishing platform to make a profit on a single sale, which is printed only if and when an order comes in so there is no minimum number of orders required before the project becomes viable.

Better still, we now have the eBook. Many self-published authors record the majority of their sales from eBooks. Because no paper or physical printing is involved the royalty for the writer is greater when a buyer downloads your book to read on their laptop or Kindle.

You are the Proofreader and the Promoter

By way of managing expectations creative writing is not, for most people, the realisation of all their financial dreams. It is an income stream, rather like freelancing, bonus scalping with sportsbooks or responding to online surveys. No more. What it also is though is a unique opportunity to announce your creativity to the world, to place your talents in the shop window for others to see and to appreciate.

There is a downside, of course, as there usually is. With no publisher involved and nobody else with a financial interest in your efforts nobody is going to help or advise you unless it is somebody you know or someone you are paying. If your book contains spelling mistakes or punctuation errors then that is how it will appear to the unwitting reader. And, needless to say, it is incumbent upon the writer to promote the work, in the face of competition from literally millions of others around the world who will have followed the same path.

Nevertheless, with careful planning and faith in your creative skills you can at last realise your dream of writing a book in the full knowledge that it is going to end up in print, and then use your contacts and your social media portfolio to advertise and sell it. Working from home as a writer is now, at last, a wholly realistic option.

Working From Home - Your Boss Has Obligations, But Only You Can Make It a Success

Working From Home - Your Boss Has Obligations, But Only You Can Make It a Success

By Phil Andrews

Having a flexible working arrangement which allows employees to sometimes work from home can be beneficial for everybody involved - but it needs buy-in from all concerned to make it a success.

The traditional model of having everybody clock in at nine in the morning and out again at five had its advantages, but it reflected a mindset which has long had its day. Some firms, of course, have taken longer to emerge from that mindset than others, but recent years have seen a substantially more adaptable approach on the part of many bosses as the lifestyles of employees as well as consumer expectations change.

Employers' Obligations to Consider Home Working Options

In recognition of these new realities legislation exists to ensure that every employer gives reasonable consideration to a request for flexible working arrangements, subject to certain conditions having been met. Employees have redress if stipulated procedures, such as a meeting to discuss such an application, are not followed. There is some evidence to suggest that employers' attitudes are changing as it becomes clear that removing unnecessary areas of conflict between an employee's private and working life leads to greater work satisfaction and increased productivity. A report from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development has argued that implementing flexible working practices can improve engagement and motivation amongst staff.

But changing workplace cultures and the attitude of employers is only half the story. Working successfully from home is a strict discipline to which the employee also needs to adapt if the arrangement is to prove successful. The home and life within it are filled with potential distractions and without a positive effort being made to tackle these it is unlikely that productivity will benefit from relocation away from the workplace.

Overcoming Distractions and Obstacles to Working From Home

This is no small obstacle to overcome. Having to attend to children and family business, simple domestic obligations like laundry, shopping, cooking and the television can all compete for the employee's attention. Without supervision some will undoubtedly lack the discipline to work the required number of hours with the required level of concentration to be able to replicate the performance they would provide in the workplace. Even people who work privately and independently from home, following such disciplines as freelancing, creative writing or filling in online surveys, are aware of the importance of creating the right ambience in which to work. Sometimes relocating to another room, or to an entirely different environment, may be necessary to ensure the right conditions.

Informed opinion seems to suggest that flexible working from home, where the nature of the work permits, engenders greater productivity and enhanced employee satisfaction and thereby loyalty, but this is only achievable when focus and concentration are maintained, work is structured and distractions can be eliminated.

Escalate the Expectation of the Endurance Expected

Escalate the Expectation of the Endurance Expected

By Steve Wickham

YOU have a big goal, and the challenge will be more difficult than you expect. But this is good news if you escalate your expectation beforehand. What I mean is, if you anticipate this goal before you will be the hardest thing you'll ever do, then you will face it with the force required to overcome it.

If, whatever it is, is the most important thing you've ever done, then you will succeed. You will succeed because it has your fullest attention and God blesses everything we give our all to.

There are two vitalising components to this fullest sense of attention required: depth and length. Depth, because you cannot afford to let your attention waver. Length, because unless you sustain the depth of attention required long enough to endure, you will be returned to the start, and that fact alone is the maddest frustration.

Raise the bar of your focus and keep it raised, and then you will succeed.

Falter upon your focus and you will fail. Even as you read these words aloud in your mind, steel yourself; you will succeed if this thing is important enough to you.

If it proves that this goal is only partly necessary, and you really don't need me to tell you, because you know through experience already, you will fail. Are you ready and willing to fail? No, of course not. But you are able to fail, and the knowledge you have of that ability you have, alone, should spur you.

So raise the bar! Higher, then it needs to be, for then it will be as high as it needs to be. Then you will succeed.

Being Seen: Can The Fear Of Being Harmed Stop Someone From Wanting To Be Seen?

Being Seen: Can The Fear Of Being Harmed Stop Someone From Wanting To Be Seen?

By Oliver JR Cooper

It could be said that whenever one spends time around others, they are going to be seen. Therefore, the only way for one to not be seen by others will be for them to spend time by themselves.

Black and White

This is then something that is not hard to understand; in fact, it is perfectly clear. With this in mind, if one doesn't want to be seen by others, it is going to mean that they will have to isolate themselves from the world.

On the other hand, if one does want to be seen by others, they will simply need to make sure that they spend time around people. To understand this, there is going to be no need for one to use a lot of brain power.

Hidden In Plain Sight

Nevertheless, although this might seem to be the case, there is far more to this than meets the eye. What this comes down to is that someone doesn't need to isolate themselves in order to hide.

The only thing that they need to do is to spend time around others but to make sure that other people don't see them. When this takes place, one is not going to want to draw attention to themselves.

Three Parts

There can be the kind of clothes they wear, their body language, and what their energy is like. Each one of these elements will have a part to play, and one might not even have to think about any of them.

One could have been this way for so long that it is no longer necessary for them to consciously think about what they need to do to hide. When it comes to their clothes, they may typically wear dark colours.

Invisible

Wearing grey or black, for instance, can allow them to fade into the background. They could often have closed body language, giving off the message that they don't want to be approached, and they may also find it hard to maintain eye contact.

Energetically, it could be as though they are somewhere else, and this is because they may find it hard to embrace the present moment. Most of their attention could be in their mind, or it might even seem as though it is somewhere else entirely.

A Number of Things

It is then not just one thing that will allow this person to merge into the background; it is a combination of things. What this illustrates is that being noticed is not just about being around others.

And even though someone like this has the need to hide, it doesn't mean that every part of them is on board with this. Another part of them will probably have the need to be seen, but this is likely to be overshadowed by their need to hide.

Inner Conflict

Part of them is going to be in control, and this is going to cause them to experience a certain amount of pain. The part of them that wants to be seen could be described as their true-self.

This is the part of them that relates to their true needs and feelings; whereas their false-self relates to a role that they play to survive. Playing this role will allow them to 'fit in', yet what it won't do is allow them to live a life that is worth living.

Another Area

Consequently, their relationships are unlikely to be very fulfilling - how could they be if one doesn't feel comfortable enough to be seen? They are likely to play a role when they are around their friends, thereby ignoring their true needs and feelings.

One could be drawn to people who are comfortable with attention, making it easy for them to stay in the shadows. These people might treat them reasonably well, or they could have the tendency to abuse them in some way.

A Closer Look

Although behaving in this way is having a negative effect on their life, it is going to be what feels safe. So, if they were to change their behaviour, they could end up experiencing fear, anxiety, and shame, amongst other things.

It can be hard to understand why someone would experience so much fear; especially when having the need to be seen is part of being human. What this is likely to show is that there was time in their life when it wasn't safe for them to express themselves.

More Than Once

At the same time, they may have had a number of moments in their life when it wasn't safe enough for them to assert themselves. If this relates to what happened when they were younger, this may have been what it was like day after day, year after year.

This may have been a time when they were physically abused, and this would have caused them to experience a lot of trauma. Being seen would have been associated as something that would put their life at risk.

Perfectly Normal

It is not going to matter how many years have passed since that time in their life, as what took place all those years ago will continue to define how their perceive the world and how they behave. Taking this into account, it might seem as though the best approach is for this person to change their thoughts and behaviour.

A behavioural therapy type approach is then the key to one being able to reveal their true-self. This might work, but then again, it might not have much of an effect on their behaviour.

Awareness

A more direct approach would be for one to deal with the trauma that is within them and then their view of the world and behaviour will change naturally. If one can relate to this, and they want to change their life, they may need to work with a therapist or a healer.

Critical Thinking: Can A Child's Need For Approval Make Them Want To Change Their Gender?

Critical Thinking: Can A Child's Need For Approval Make Them Want To Change Their Gender?

By Oliver JR Cooper

For a number of years now, a lot has been said about adults and children who don't feel comfortable with their gender. And what can define what something thinks about all this can be their age.

A Different World

If someone is at the beginning of their life, for instance, they might not have a lot to say about all this. The reason for this is that they may have heard a lot about this whilst they were at school or university.

As a result, this is not going to be something that they find strange; it could just be seen as a normal part of life. Alternatively, if one has been on this planet for quite some time, they might find it hard to understand what is going on.

Completely Confused

One could wonder what is going on for someone who isn't comfortable with their gender, seeing this as a sign that this person is lost. This might be as far as they go, or they could have the desire to find out more about this.

Having said that, it is not always going to be this black and white. There are bound to be people who have grown up with this who can't get their head around it, and for people who haven't who don't have issue with this.

Two Experiences

With that aside, the kind of experience a child has, when they are not comfortable with their gender, is likely to be different to the experience that an adult has. For one thing, an adult is going to have more control over their life.

In addition to this, they are typically going to have a better understanding of themselves. Taking this into account, if an adult is not comfortable with their gender it could be said that they need to do something about it.

A Big Decision

However, if someone wanted to change their appearance, it is going to be important for them to make sure that they truly want to take this step. Taking this step will be similar to taking a one way trip to mars - there will be no going back.

This could then be a time when one will need to work with a therapist to explore the reasons as to why they want to do this. One may find that they no longer want to go through with this process afterwards, or it might not have much of an effect on them.

An Important Process

But even if one doesn't change their mind, at least they will have taken the time to make sure this is the right step for them to take. If they were to work with a therapist and came to decide that they no longer want to go through this with process, they may have found out why they were experiencing so much conflict when they compared what was taking place within them, with how they looked in the mirror.

One of the things that may have had an effect could have been what they experienced as a child. They might not have had a positive relationship with their mother or father, for instance.

A Very Different Experience

If a child, on the other hand, has a problem with their gender, there is only going to be so much that they can do. In order for anything to take place, they will probably need their caregiver/s support.

Nevertheless, there is the chance that their caregiver/s is right behind them, meaning that this is not something that the child will have to worry about. And as far as their caregiver/s is concerned, there might not be anything wrong with their child.

Stepping Back

Yet, just because their caregiver/s is on board with what their child is going through, it doesn't mean that their child should simply go ahead and have a sex change, for instance. Firstly, one has to wonder is there has ever been a child on this planet who has felt comfortable with their gender.

Secondly, there is a strong chance that this child has the need to please their caregiver/s. Thus, if one or both of their caregivers has asked their child if they feel comfortable being a boy or a girl and they have given off the impression that they shouldn't be, then it is not going to be a surprise for the child to go along with this.

A Number of Influences

What can also play a part is if the child has been asked this question whilst they were at school or during a hospital appointment, for example. Children are very good at reading people, so it is not going to take a lot for them get a sense of what they should or shouldn't say.

Along with this, a child could have at least one caregiver who is more concerned about their own needs than their child's needs. Subsequently, if this caregiver has the need to look good or is a 'narcissist', they might encourage their child to change their gender so that they can look good or 'progressive'.

Child Abuse

The fact that the child's brain is still developing and that they are not in a position to know what is or what isn't right for them at this stage in their life is going to be overlooked. Their caregiver is going to be too caught up with their own needs to be able truly connect to their child or to realise this it is not abnormal for someone to be confused at age.

But as today's society actively encourages children to change their gender, there is going to be no reason for a caregiver like this to change their behaviour. Instead of seeing the caregiver as someone who is out of touch with reality, they can be seen as an example to follow.

Conclusion

Ultimately, it is a caregiver's responsibility to protect their child, and this involves making rational decisions. Giving a young child the ability to change their appearance before they are even old enough to think about the consequences of their actions is completely irresponsible.

If young children are being asked if they are comfortable with their gender - at a time when they are extremely suggestible - is it really a surprise that so many children have said that they are not? When someone thinks about child abuse, they can think about physical abuse or neglect, but what they probably won't think about is when a caregiver encourages their child to have a sex change or simple stands by and lets it happen - this can be seen as another form of neglect, or a sign that a caregiver is giving their child too much control.

Perhaps the reason why children are being asked this question is due to the fact that they are so vulnerable, and this is then the best age group to target. It has been said that the people behind the scenes want to create an androgynous society - everyone will then be the same, making them easier to control.

Critical Thinking: Is The Hollywood Harassment Scandal Being Used To Demonize All Men?

Critical Thinking: Is The Hollywood Harassment Scandal Being Used To Demonize All Men?

By Oliver JR Cooper

Due to what has been taking place in Hollywood recently, a lot has been said about the people who were involved. It hasn't stopped there, though, as there are also people who have taken a completely different approach.

One Focus

When this happens, someone can say that this shows what men are like and how destructive their sexual nature is. And if someone was to say this, there is a strong chance that they will describe themselves as a "feminist".

This could mean that they are a woman, but then again, this could something that a man will come out with. If this is a man, he could see himself as someone who cares about women; whereas there are going to be others who say that this person doesn't feel comfortable in their own skin.

Sexism and Misandry

The actions of a few men are going to be seen as a reflection of what all men are like, and this person is then going to give all the reasons as to why this is the case. It is highly likely that this person will lean to the left side of the political spectrum.

The irony is that someone like this is likely to talk about how bad sexism is and yet, they will fail to see how their behaviour is a textbook example of what it means to be sexist. With this in mind, this is also the perfect example of someone who lacks self-awareness and the ability to reflect.

The Pot Calling The Kettle Black

In addition to what someone like this will say about sexism, they are bound to talk about misogyny and internalised misogyny. But while this is on their mind, they are clearly oblivious to their own misandry and internalised misandry.

The fact that people are allowed to have these kinds of views printed in the mainstream media shows how men are not given the same amount of respect as women. If someone wrote an article saying that all women are bad and that their sexuality is destructive, would it be printed?

No Chance

However, when someone says the same thing about men, there appears to be absolutely no resistance. Taking this into account, one has to wonder if the people who say that sexism is a bad thing truly believe this.

Based on how these types of people behave, it creates the impression that they believe that sexism is only bad when it is against one gender. What this would then show is that they only have a problem with discrimination when it is against women, not men.

Total Hypocrisy

On the surface, then, they can create the impression that they are moral human beings who care about social justice, when in reality they are immoral and only care about their own interests. The mask that someone like this presents to the world is going to be nothing like who they really like.

Ultimately, when someone says that the actions of the few represent the many, it is an example of what takes place when they don't use their brain. It is a form of black and white thinking, and doesn't require any effort whatsoever.

The Problem

It could be said that the reason why men can be bashed in this way is because of how they have been portrayed for so long. Along with this, men are often seen as being 'privileged' and having all the power.

As a result of this, it is easy for someone to treat men badly and then for them to believe that their behaviour was justified. This is similar to how someone can steal something from someone who has a lot of money and not feel bad about it.

Ideologically Blind

But even though this person has a lot of money, one is still taking something that doesn't belong to them. So, if men have it so easy, it is only fair that they are brought down to size.

Therefore, the idea that these people have of men makes it impossible for them to realise that not all men are the same. And while men can behave in destructive ways, so can women; this is not something that is limited to one gender.

Avoidance

One way of looking at this would be to say that if a woman has issues when it comes to men or if a man has issues when it comes to his own gender, there is no reason for them to seek help. The only thing that they need to do is join a collectivist movement and to project their issues onto others.

What has happened in their life is then not their responsibility; it is simply of reflection of what all men are like. Perhaps someone like this has got some kind of personality disorder, who knows.

All Men Are the Same

When it comes to the kind of experiences that someone has in life, they are not simply observers of what has taken place. Considering this, if a woman is used to coming into contact with men who are abusive, for instance, it doesn't prove that all men are the same - what it is likely to show is that she has the tendency to attract abusive men

It will then be essential for her to look into what is taking place within her as this will allow her to realise why she is drawn to these kinds of men. Perhaps she had an abusive childhood, which would have caused her to feel comfortable with this type of behaviour.

Conclusion

It is far easier for someone to blame other people for for what is going on in their life than it is for them to look in the mirror and to look into what part they are playing in what keeps showing up. Instead of changing their own life by taking responsibility, they will try to change their life by controlling others.

If one truly wants to make a difference in the world and doesn't just want to control other people, one of the best things that they can do will be to own their own pain and then to work through this pain. This can take place with the assistance of a therapist or a healer.

Thinking of Changing To Superfoods & a Raw Diet

Thinking of Changing To Superfoods & a Raw Diet

By Kiesha Michelle F

Are you interested in a superfood/rawfood diet, but like me you don't think you can do it all the time? The truth is, you don't have to, especially not to start. In today's world we are conditioned to be quick and efficient, and to be quick we have been introduced to fast food and processed food.

I think what a lot of people do wrong as do I (in the process of fixing my diet) is to think of the food being taken away, so of course with that kind of thinking it becomes nearly impossible to go for a superfood/rawfood diet. However, if we try adding the superfood/rawfood into our existing diet, things like raw vegetables, sprouts, fruits, and juices, you won't have such a hard time switching. After adding these fruits to your diet you may not be as hungry and when you're not hungry, you won't give into buying fast food and processed food. Since you will have more time to think about your purchases and you have become more accustomed to eating healthier. If you want that steak or even a McDonald's hamburger, you can treat yourself to it, and it will taste so much better... or you may be so lucky that you will not want it at all. Once you start eating Superfoods though, you will start to notice how good you feel and how much more energy you have, that hamburger just won't look as good to you anymore.

In the process of changing your diet and after transformation you do want to be sure though, that you're getting enough of the right kinds of nutrition. Eating Superfoods/raw foods isn't just enough you need to do some research on how to add your essential proteins to your new diet. Remember before you got your protein through your meat but now you have to get it through your vegetables and raw food so you need to know what to eat and what combinations you need to eat to get enough proteins.

One way to do this is to introduce a new vegetable or raw dish every week. If you are to buy a new vegetable each week and get used to the taste by using it in your meal the whole week. By doing this you will adapt to the new tastes and textures and you will start feeling worse and worse for each time you go for fast food or processed food.

6 Ways to Choose Video Games for Kids

6 Ways to Choose Video Games for Kids

By Shalini Madhav

Video games are the popular gifts for kids of today. As a parent, you need to ensure that the games your kids play are fun, affordable and safe. It's true that video games should not be the primary source of entertainment for your kids, but playing games every now and then won't hurt. Given below are some easy ways to choose the right game. Read on to know more.

1. Read Reviews

Reading reviews is one of the ways of looking for the right one. All you have to do is search for the game titles that interest you. These reviews are left by other parents. For instance, you can head to Common Sense Media. The reviews will give you a pretty good idea of how suitable a game would be for your kids.

2. Check The Rating

Make sure that the titles you choose are suitable for the game of your kid. Typically, ESRB rating system is used to rate the games. For instance, the rating may be either EC or AO. The important thing is to skip titles that are "M" rated. Actually, the problem is that these titles may contain unsuitable stuff, such as strong language, sexual content, and intense violence. Aside from this, these products may be too addictive for your children. For instance, games in the Call of Duty series may not be a good choice for minors. As for general rating, you should go for ones with above average ratings.

3. Go For Free Games

Maybe your son will look games that are based on his favorite TV shows. Mostly, these types of titles are free. So, money is not a problem but make sure you consider the ESRB rating. You can find them online on many websites. So, you don't have to go from one shop to another.

4. Know the Impact of Your Game

If you want to check the impact of a certain game on your kid, a good way of doing so is to sit with your kid at the PC. This way you can easily find out if it is child-friendly or educational. As soon as you get familiar with a particular title, you can give your kid the free access to it. However, don't let your children play the games all day long.

5. Your Kids' Interests

Do you children love sports? Maybe they are into art and enjoy their favorite morning cartoons. If you choose the right ones, it will help them develop their skills at that particular sport.

6. Game Time

You can let your kid play their favorite games, but make sure they don't spend all their time on a mobile or PC. They should do their schoolwork in time and perform other activities. As a general rule, around an hour of game play is enough for most kids.

If you are not into technology, choosing the right games can be a challenge for you. However, reading reviews can help you make the selection a lot easier. Hopefully, you will find this article helpful.

Platinum Prices Will Soar in 2018

Platinum Prices Will Soar in 2018

By Matt Badiali

It was a brutal six years for the mining industry. While some metals saw their prices rebound in 2017, others didn't.

There is a formula for rising prices - demand must exceed supply. In some cases, like zinc, a lack of investment meant supply fell below demand. Copper, whose price rose 27%since early 2016, is another metal that will struggle to meet demand.

In 2018, a different metal's price will begin its rise...

Platinum's New Trend

Platinum's price steadily declined from 2011 to 2016. The price fell by more than half to January 2016. There was a brief rebound that year. Then the price collapsed to its lowest price in two years earlier this month.

The question is: Why do I think this trend will change in 2018?

The answer is simple... supply can't keep up with demand. In 2017, the supply/demand number was almost even. According to the World Platinum Investment Council, 2017 will end with a small deficit, around 15,000 ounces.

However, that same group expects the gap to expand. In 2018, demand for platinum will rise 2% to 8 million ounces. Supply will fall by 1% to 7.75 million ounces. That means the deficit will be 250,000 ounces.

An Extreme Low for Platinum Prices

In the past, this kind of deficit was enough to draw platinum sellers out. However, the platinum price is sitting at an extreme low. Without a significant increase in price, there won't be an incentive for sellers. That's one reason I expect platinum prices to rise in 2018.

But there's another reason... sentiment.

One of the reasons that copper prices rose so rapidly in 2017 was the idea that electric vehicles would spur demand. That's right, the price of copper rose because of expected demand. On the opposite side of the coin, platinum prices fell because of a lack of expected demand.

Platinum's main commercial use is in diesel catalytic converters. In the wake of the Volkswagen scandal, where the company admitted to faking diesel efficiency, the perception of diesel cars fell. And so did the perception of platinum.

In other words, investors didn't think demand for platinum would come, so they didn't buy platinum. And so, the price fell.

From a supply perspective, platinum is far worse off than either zinc or copper. Platinum isn't widespread. Most of the existing mines are deep, old and running out of metal. There aren't many new platinum mines on the horizon.

Add that to low prices (which spur demand) and a stronger European economy (that prefers diesel cars). That will change platinum's fortunes in 2018. It wouldn't surprise me to see platinum prices rise 25% next year.

In Quest of Old China

In Quest of Old China

By Tara Goldsmith

The threshold was high and in line with tradition, I crossed it by lifting my left foot while Tim, my guide, lifted his right. We felt the uneven bare floor under our feet as we entered the dark room. The sun was gleaming strongly outside, striking through the roof holes, like a ray of death showing us blurred lines of scattered furniture. There was not much to see. The house looked empty except for a cooker, some kind of wardrobe with a mixture of well-used pans and occasional garments. From the corner, just behind the cooker we heard a trembling "NJIHAO" and our first instinct was to run back out of the house we had entered uninvited. We were in quest of old Chinese life which was disappearing fast and were hoping to get "that" photo here in the destitute fishing village near the popular tourist town of China. We didn't expect to see any people.

"Njihao" replied Tim apologetically.

And then we saw her, the old lady with a stick, in a blue Mao Tze Tung uniform, sitting on a handmade tripod chair, the same as my grandfather used to make back in Bosnia. She was 86, almost blind and disabled. She has a daughter in Beijing and granddaughter in Shanghai who is married and expecting a child which she is hopping to be a boy.

"Enough of girls in our family!" she declared and bounced the stick on the earth floor.

From her left pocket she pulled worn photos of happy women with huge smiles.

"They come here once every two years. It's expensive and they have to work hard. My daughter is working in the factory in Beijing but my granddaughter is in charge of a big hotel". And she cracked a very proud toothless smile followed by strong cough.

I turned my head towards the door hiding my tears. Do I offer to clean the house? That's what I automatically do on visits to my grandparents. But then we were in the middle of China and this place could be hardly called a house. Do we call her daughter and granddaughter and tell them off for leaving this 86-year-old on her own? But then I am sure they are aware of that and the amount of money they are making cannot mask their guilt.

"What does she eat?"

"Villagers bring food for her."

"Can we do anything for her?"

Tim shrugged hopelessly, so accustomed to China and her 21st Century where rapid progress deserts its past.

Suddenly I pulled all the money I had in my wallet and thrust it at the abandoned old lady without thinking where she was going to spend it or on what. I just wanted to feel that I had done something. She kissed my hand which made me cry even more, and ran out without even saying goodbye to her.

Summer Tips to Keep You Healthy

Summer Tips to Keep You Healthy

By Kedarshini Ramen

Dreaming about laying back on the sun lounger, sand between your toes and cocktail in hand. The sun's rays feel good right? But they're no friend to your skin.

Though you won't see it right away, they give you wrinkles and age spots, and they're the top cause of skin cancer!

Overexposure to UV rays from the sun or sunbeds is the number one cause of developing skin cancer. You need to make sure you are doing everything that you can to protect yourselves so that you can enjoy your time in the sun. With the approach of Sun Awareness Week, we thought it would be the perfect time to share with you some of our top tips for staying safe in the sun this summer.

1. Seek shade

From 11am to 3pm the sun is at its strongest. During this period it is recommended for you to stay out of the sun as you are more at risk of burning or developing heatstroke. If you are having lunch in your garden or at the sea-side you may seek shade under a parasol to have maximum protection.

2. Stay hydrated

Spending too much time in the sun without drinking water will get you chronically dehydrated. It is recommended to reduce the consumption of caffeinated drinks or alcoholic beverages during hot days, as this will tend to make you even more dehydrated. You should drink at least eight glasses of water every day and even more on hot days to stay hydrated. Dehydrated skin is more prone to sun damage, so drink plenty of water!

3. Wear sunscreen

When you are exposed to the sun, always make sure that you are wearing a sunscreen that is right for you. It is important to know which sunscreen is suitable for you skin type and blocks both ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B radiation. Before applying your sunscreen, always check its expiry date. It should usually last for about 12 months from opening, moreover you can also check the label on the product. Always apply liberally and remember to reapply after swimming even if it says it is a water resistant sunscreen. Remember also that UV rays bounce off sand, snow, concrete, and water.

4. Clothing

Cover up with a hat that shades your face, neck and ears and a good pair of sunglasses. When deciding about which fabric to wear in summer choose cotton to absorb excess sweating or close-weave fabrics which give the best protection. Skin that's not usually in the sun is most likely to burn. So take extra care with your back, shoulders and tummy.

5. Self-tan

Instead of exposing yourself to potentially harmful UV rays, use a self-tan to achieve that healthy brown glow you're desiring.

Now that the countdown is on to summer and you will be spending more time outdoors start practising these sun safe tips, in order to guarantee an enjoyable holiday and summer in the sun!

What Qualifications Do You Have?

What Qualifications Do You Have?

By Oliver JR Cooper

At the beginning of last year I had a few videos made, and one of those videos was about what qualifications I had. What inspired me to make this video was an email that I had received around that time.

In this email someone said that they liked my work or that they liked an article, but they wanted to know what qualifications I had. This was something that caused me to experience a fairly strong reaction.

Two Levels

Intellectually, I wanted to know why this person wanted to know this, with me wondering why this mattered. Emotionally, this brought up my own issues around not being good enough and feeling like a fraud.

So, although I had already written hundreds of articles and written a number of books, it hadn't changed what was going on at a deeper level. All the positive emails and comments that I had received didn't do much either.

Two Factors

What had played a part was how I was treated as a child and what took place at school. I was often told that I was useless growing up, amongst other things, and I didn't do very well at school.

Therefore, even though I had come a long way since then and I was longer the same person, the view I had of myself didn't reflect who I had become. Being asked this question also made me think that this person wanted to know if I had a degree in psychology and as I didn't, I thought saying this would make me look bad.

Inner Conflict

Part of me wasn't bothered about having a degree and another part of me felt that I needed one; this was something I battled with for a number of years. I thought that while having a degree would be beneficial, this wasn't enough for me to go to university.

I came to see that if that was the right path for me to take, I would have taken that path at the beginning. And if I did take that path, I would have just been another person who had a degree in psychology.

The Right Path

Through taking the scenic route, I had the chance to work though my own pain and to share my views at the same time. This was not a path that someone else laid out for me; it was a path that I had to create.

I didn't know where it would lead; I just had the drive to understand and to heal myself. Being a psychologist did appeal to me at the beginning but it is not something that interests me now.

Personal Responsibility

And let's face it, even if I did have a degree it wouldn't mean that everything I come out with would be the truth. Having a degree proves that someone knows certain things, but what it doesn't mean is that they are omniscient

The only thing that I can do, as is the case for everything on this planet, is present what I know. I will always do my best to provide information that has been well-thought-out, yet what I can't do is provide a guarantee.

Switched On

At the end of the day, I'm just another person who is trying to make sense of my own life and the world around me. And if someone was to find out that I don't have a degree and this caused them to engage their brain instead of putting it to one side when they read my work, I would be pleased.

I would much rather have this then have someone accept everything I say just because I have a degree. This person would be giving their power away, and the only person who can truly understand them is the person they see in the mirror.

Another Experience

Saying this makes me think about a comment that was left on one of my articles recently, saying that "you didn't site any sources to further more explain how your information was accurate". Hearing this didn't have a negative effect on me; it was like water off a duck's back

I came to see how far I had come with my own growth and then I thought about how it was as though I had just submitted an article for an exam. I mentioned this when I replied and I said that it was not my intention you prove anything, I was simply sharing my own views.

Final Thoughts

I also said that it was up to them to decide whether it was accurate or not, and that it was important for them to trust their own judgement. I have read a lot of books on abuse and neglect, taken courses, had healing and worked through a lot of stuff, but that doesn't mean that I see myself as someone who knows everything.

I am learning every day, and I would like to think that this will be how I will be for the rest of my life. I believe that we have to be own authority and to come to our own conclusion as to whether something is right or not.

Every Obstacle Is The Way Forward

Every Obstacle Is The Way Forward

By Rosemarie Sumalinog Gonzales

When affronted with obstacles, we need to keep going till the time we succeed. We always need to move another step even if it means committing mistakes along the way. In fact, one step at a time is not that difficult. Small attempt will complete any undertaking.

Life is unforeseeable. We need to embrace it and be ready for change which makes life so interesting. You will come across obstacles in life from time and time but what matters is how we react to them and whether we keep our resilience. Overcoming those obstacles determines how successful we will be.

People who persist no matter how hard, sooner or later are destined to succeed. Despite the setbacks, we have to turn these obstacles into a stepping stone. Never complain, or worse, to just give up because these choices do nothing to get us across the finish line.

What seemed hopeless failure may turn into a glorious success because everything in life is a quest. Life is a journey and it's about growing and coming to terms with who and what you are and loving who and what you are. It's in fact about acceptance of yourself despite your flaws. If you are not investing your full energy, effort and time, progress will be slow or will never happen at all.

Prepare for the uncertainties of life by studying and adopting how others in the past got by with the unforeseeable and the unpredictable. Each and every day of your life is unpredictable. What you can do is just have to go with the flow. You need to make calculated risks if you want to overcome these roadblocks to success.

Even if failure worries you because nobody wants to fail, develop be grateful and give thanks for opportunities that are open to you, knowing that every step you make is a step toward achieving something better than your current circumstance. By striving to do the impossible, you can achieve what is possible. Those who are careful and cautious not to take a single step further because they think that it is not possible have failed because of their fear to commit any mistake.

Every mistake you make or every thing that you might regret can be a step forward. You just move forward and let them go because there will be a lot of negative responses but that won't last forever. By striving to do the impossible, man has always achieved what is possible. Those who have cautiously done no more than they believed possible have never taken a single step forward.

Develop an attitude of gratitude, and give thanks for everything that happens to you, knowing that every step forward is a step toward achieving something bigger and better than your current situation.

The journey towards success is the process of working through each step to arrive at the next one without fail. But committing mistakes and learning in the process is better than not making any attempt at all.

Live Long: What Water Is The Best?

Live Long: What Water Is The Best?

By Alex Romm

There are many opinions in this respect. But all depends on the purpose of fasting. If the fasting is very much serious, if, for example, it is required to cure or ease a dangerous illness considerably and quickly, then certainly the most suitable water for such fasting would be distilled water. If the fasting's task is just a little cleaning before a long juice-diet, the best water usually is well-filtered water. But in our case of a short-term fasting the proper training for the first attempts is to accustom the organism to this kind of therapeutic fasting. Therefore, the easier goes the first day the better.

And the simplest fasting is the water one, a fast with carbonated water. Initially the water should have neither minerals nor salts virtually. Read its label, there should be the content listed. If you are not sure, better to ask a seller or an assistant in the supermarket. Choose the most pure and most low mineral water of what you are able to obtain. Remember: there in that water should be nothing except carbonic gas and a very little addition (as minimum as possible) of minerals. It is your ideal water.

It does not need to be cooled, the room temperature suits the fasting best of all. Buy some bottles. You will need about one gallon in total, though better to buy it in smaller bottles because it will help you to have at least one bottle always with you. Please drink this water every time you feel thirst. And drink it even more if suddenly comes the appetite.

Even if you drink too much it is not dangerous. The main thing is: this day you should press down and quench both the thirst and the appetite. Fill in your body with water. Though there is no need of being addicted to water drinking too much. You can drink safely up to 12 pints of water that day. Or more. Or less. No restrictions.

WHY THE CARBONATED WATER IS BETTER

There is a rather little though important reason for that. The first advantage is that carbonated water has a weak acid reaction. Not to go into details, we can say that the weak carbonic acid in that water will never allow your organism to store up any salts neither in joints nor in blood vessels. It is very good for you. The second reason is the low salt concentration which was there in the water initially. During the carbonation process at the factory some salts drop down as a deposit and do not get into bottles.

As a rule, the carbonated water has a much lower percentage of salts than pure non-carbonated water. And again, it is very good. The third reason is taste. As a whole the carbonated water is a little bit tastier and gives a more fresh feeling than not carbonated waters. On fasting it is always a pleasure to feel a taste; it may calm the appetite down. And at last the fourth reason, the very important one, especially during the first days of fasting: drinking the carbonated water you will feel hundreds of microscopic bulbs of carbonic gas in your mouth; this usually simulates a food or something like food, thereby deceiving your digestion desires. In other words, with the carbonated water it will be easier to suppress the appetite, and refraining from meal will be slightly less problematic too.

PREJUDICES AGAINST CARBONATED WATER

Some people spread rumors and ridiculous prejudices against carbonated water. The especially baseless one is that the carbonic gas is harmful. To understand all the false ground and ignorance of such statement one should simply recollect an axiom.

Each person inhales 33 pounds of air a day in average, and sure, that person exhales exactly as much. In the exhaled air there is 4% of carbonic gas. Please let us count and see: within a day a person exhales some about 20 ounces of pure carbonic gas. It is absolutely normal, it is that same carbonic gas which is formed in each person as a result of ordinary breath.

But a two-pint big bottle of carbonated water contains just as much as 0.2oz of carbonic gas. It turns out that a common person exhales as much carbonic gas a day as we can collect from 120 big two-pint bottles! But even having thirst on fasting that person will hardly drink more than 4 of such bottles. That is 30 (thirty!) times less than that same person exhales in his normal state during that same day. Whether that little quantity is able to damage the organism? Definitely not. Moreover that gas is a good thing, a natural stuff that each of us produces every minute every day.

Studying Effectively For Exams - A How-To Guide

Studying Effectively For Exams - A How-To Guide

By Shilpa Dhamne

Entrance exams after middle schools have become the common norm for the students who aspire to enter specific career streams. These exams have become the intrinsic component because of the higher number of aspirants and the emergent competition dynamics in almost every field. The seats are limited while each year large numbers of students want to get through the screening and gain a seat in the top institutions in higher education and learning. An entrance exam has, therefore, become a career kiosk for the student and needs to be mastered if the future is to be secured!

What is most required for cracking the entrance exam?

It is important to note the fact that a student despite passing his 10th or 12th classes board exams with good marks finds difficulty in getting through the entrance and screening tests organized by various institutions. This is an irony! Experts in the coaching and counseling field opine that the gap lies not in the substance but in the direction. The student has grabbed all the concepts pretty well but he still finds a problem in applying those concepts of the syllabus while attempting the competition papers at entrance exams! This means that proper guidance is sought by the competitor and in a dynamic manner too; so that he is able to mold the acquired knowledge and learning as per the demand of the higher order questions served to him in the competition.

How to seek good guidance and assistance for the entrance exam?

Choice of the mentor or guide is necessary who not only delivers the core concepts but also inculcates in the student, the ability to make use of those concepts in solving the presented problems and analyses. Practice is also important and thus regular test series need to be attempted by the student. A self-study and assessment schedule should be considered as a generic continuous activity by the student.

Train your mind for the exam

Your mind should be prepared to perform well during an exam. This requires consistency over a long period of time. If you are planning to give your exam in 9-12 slot, you should practice solving papers at the same time so that your mind is trained to be super active during that period.

Stay Physically and Mentally Balanced

Keeping yourself and your mind healthy is quite neglected during exam preparation but it can have adverse effects in the final outcome. Exercise daily and sleep well so that your mind and body are fresh when you are taking the exam. Avoid sleeping late and tune your mind so that it works best in the time slot of your final exam.

With these confirmations, the entrance exam kiosk lays wide open for the aspirant for sure!

How To Develop A Website Content Strategy

How To Develop A Website Content Strategy

By Jon Allo

A website content strategy is a plan of how you are going to use content material to develop and market your online business. Content isn't just limited to written text. It can involve videos, polls, graphics, images and many other things which make your website more interesting for your readers.

There are two fundamental components of a website content strategy:

The content material you actually publish onto your website. This includes, how frequently you publish, what you write about, how far in advance you plan and produce the content, etc.

The content you use to promote and market your website, such as social media posts and emails to your subscriber list.

Why Is A Content Strategy Important?

Having a strategy means you can plan ahead. Instead of simply publishing a new post on any random subject, you can plan subjects strategically based on special offers, the time of the year etc. Planning ahead also helps you post on a regular, steady schedule. This is important for keeping readers interested and the search engines happy, as they like new content.

Creating An Online Content Strategy

Regardless of how valuable your content is, if you publish a huge chunk of text that looks boring, you won't get many readers. The eye isn't drawn to large sections of text. This is why it's so important to have different types of content on your website when promoting your online business.

Video

Videos are one of the top ways to bring in more traffic and keep people on your website for longer. There are numerous ways to make videos and it doesn't mean you have to stand in front of a camera. You can create videos using just text, images and a voice-over.

Interactive Content

Polls and surveys are a great form of interactive content. People enjoy interacting online. It makes it more interesting for them and encourages them to stay on your website for longer. This drives up your income and boosts the reputation of your business, thus causing it to rank higher in the search engines.

Social Media

Having a live feed of opinions people are making about your content can encourage people to visit your website. Posting testimonials that people have given about your business will also make good quality content that people will want to read. You could even invite some of your regular readers to be interviewed for your next blog post.

No matter how much you enjoy being an online entrepreneur, some days you stare at a blank screen and struggle for content creation ideas. How Natural Playgrounds Help in Children Growth

How Natural Playgrounds Help in Children Growth

By Jason Fernandez Walter

In a world full of digital advancement, it's a privilege to access natural beauty and make the most of it. Playground structures in the modern times are more inclined towards installing different types of outdoor playground equipment. They do benefit kids in terms of maintaining physical health, but they aren't as beneficial as natural playgrounds.

The term natural playground implies structures that use natural materials and existing topology to design a play area that promotes open-ended play. The existing topology includes trees, rocks, logs, water, and other natural elements that can be utilized for children's playing. The reason why I am emphasizing on natural playgrounds is they stimulate creativity among children. Below are some of the most effective reasons to consider.

1. They Help in Increasing Growth
The fresh air that penetrates through lungs creates a psychological impact on children's mind. As a result, they want to spend more time than they do in commercial playgrounds. According to a research, the length of kids' playtime increases up to double in natural playgrounds, which, in turn, increases their level of fitness up to twofold.

2. Promotes Imaginative Play
The natural playgrounds are more charming, welcoming, accessible, and reject the idea of discrimination. Children are bound to play certain games in the commercial playground and this is a practice that restricts their mental capabilities and curbs creativity. On the contrary, a natural playground promotes free play where children are motivated to utilize their imagination and enjoy free play. Kids do not like to be dictated; this is a natural phenomenon that exists in them.

3. Easily Accessible
Natural beauty is everywhere; it's we who are unfortunate of not using them for good. Even if a natural playground isn't near your home, you can create one in your home garden. You can install a swing on a tree or ask kids to use them for climbing. There can be a lot of ways of using natural beauty for kids' play and they would love it a lot.

4. Enhance Social Skills
Since kids are not bound and dictated to play a certain game, they interact with peers for sharing and gathering different ideas. Sometimes, they need team building, too, which also boosts their social skills. Apart from that, playing in the group always includes negotiation and problem solving that help in developing their leadership skills.

5. Develop Motor Skills
One of the greatest benefits children get from natural playgrounds is the development of their motor skills. They get the same benefits from commercial playgrounds, too, but not up to the extent to which they get while playing in a natural playground. The natural settings boost their senses of feeling and touching through the textures and natural sounds.

A natural playground is the one that promotes playing through natural settings. The benefits available in a natural setting can't be found in a conventional setup. Allow your kids to be more creative by exposing them to natural setups. Don't dictate them what and what not to play, but do take safety measures for them.

Would Having Cars That Drive Themselves Be a Good or Bad Idea?

Would Having Cars That Drive Themselves Be a Good or Bad Idea?

By Rosina S Khan

Ever wondered whether you would always like to have control over your car or have it completely automated so that it drives itself? Would that be a good idea? Let's dive into the discussion. Read on to find out.

Having a car completely automated would mean it will act as a robot in response to sensors and other activators. Would you like to give full control to your car and let it decide everything? Are you comfortable with the idea?

As for me, I am not. I would at least like to have control over my car via remote controls or something similar.

If my car drove itself, I wouldn't be fully aware if it is responding correctly to sensors and activators all the time. I wouldn't be aware of any problems it is facing until some damage or accident happens. So I am unwilling to take the risk especially if I am on a ride with my family.

What if a fully automated car could give me warning signs? The problem still exists in that whether I am able to fix the problem myself or even trace a gas station nearby. Again I am unwilling to take the risk and would like to have some control over my car.

It would be nice, on the other hand, to let all the burden of driving to my car itself. I would just have to give the instructions to the car and it would take me to my desired destination(s). It would be fun going on rides like that with friends and family as well but the pressure and worry would still be there at the back of my mind about the risks I have talked about earlier. So which type of car would you prefer?

Judging the pros and cons of having a car that drives itself, I have to conclude that it is not that great an idea. It is always great to let the glasses down and my hair down, be seated in the driver's seat, look for traffic signals and carefully drive the car myself. I would like to have power over my beautiful car and actually drive it and enjoy.

Better still, a fully automated car should have the option of giving its control over to the owner of the car on the road so that he is able to guide it and actually drive it when things go astray. Having this option as well gives the owners of cars that drive themselves some level of relief, protection and safety.

What would be your opinion on this? Would you opt for a fully automated or partially automated version of your car? Think about it and I think you will agree with me.

You Have To Be Careful What You Focus On

You Have To Be Careful What You Focus On

By Oliver JR Cooper

When I was with a friend last year, I remember touching upon what was going on with the presidential election in America. I had been paying attention to this, but this friend hadn't been doing the same thing.

I said that it was hard to work out what was going on and he said that there was no way of really knowing, or something something similar. Not only this, he didn't see the point in getting caught up in what was going on; after all, it wasn't as though we could do anything about it.

Another Distraction

If anything, he saw this as another distraction and something that would simply take his attention away from what he did have control over. It was then about bringing it back to the self and letting go of the distractions.

What this came down to is that he was aware of how important it was for us to use his attention wisely. And if he was to get caught up in this and to focus on something he no control over, it would be a waste of his time, attention and energy.

A Reminder

This wasn't the first time that I had heard anyone say this, as I had about this before; there have even been moments in my own life when I had applied this. Even so, this was a time in my life when I forget about what I 'knew'.

Fortunately, Wain, the friend who I am talking about, isn't the kind of person who acts like he knows everything. So, although I had slipped up, so to speak, I didn't feel as though I was being criticised.

Another Experience

A little while after this, he spoke about a moment in his own life when what was taking place within them had been mirrored back by others. This experienced reminded him of how careful he needed to be when it came to what he focused on.

One of the reasons why he was able to see what was going on was because if didn't take long for his inner reality to be mirrored back externally. Often, this is something that can take a while, and this is then why it can be hard to see the connection.

Looking Back

Hearing his experience made me think about what had taken place for me a number of years ago, a time in my life when a lot of trauma was triggered within me. My inner world seemed to change overnight and this meant that I started to see the world differently.

In reality, this pain had been coming up for a little while, but an event brought it all up to surface. It was as though I had ended up on a different planet; a planet that wasn't safe and where other people were not friendly.

Two Parts

Taking this into account, I think that it shows how important it is for us to be careful when it comes to what we focus on. In the same way that a garden needs to be looked after and that the right seeds need to be planted, our mind also needs to be looked after and for us to plant the right seeds).

On one level, there is what is taking place in our mind, and, at a deeper level, there is what is taking place in our body or our so-called unconscious mind. And it is going to be a lot harder for us to focus our mind if our body is loaded with trauma.

The Right Approach

With this in mind, one person might simply need to focus their mind, whilst another might also need to deal with the baggage that is in their body. During this time, they might spend a fair amount of time focusing on things that are 'negative', but this won't last forever.

And as their inner world changes and they feel better about themselves as a result, their outer world will gradually start to change. This won't be something that takes place through force; it will be a natural process.

Trust Your Instincts And Avoid Problems

Trust Your Instincts And Avoid Problems

By Linda Hancock

It was early in the morning and I had just woken up when my home phone rang. The gentleman on the other end called me by name and asked if I had made a transaction for $300.00 on my credit card at four o'clock that morning. He named the credit card that I use for my business and when I denied that I had purchased anything, he informed me that I had been scammed.

He then asked if anyone else had access to my credit card which they hadn't and requested that I cheque my purse to make sure that I had the card in my possession which I did. Next he informed me that they would have to replace both my credit card and debit card so he would connect me with the Security Department of my banking institution.

I had been scammed a couple of years ago and knew that the best way to handle things was to work with the bank to cancel the account completely and have new cards issued. At the same time, however, I thought that something about the call didn't seem right. So I asked the fellow how I would know that he could be trusted. He replied by stating that I needed to speak with the Security Department immediately and asked me to call up a website on my computer. Now I knew there was something amiss so I used my cellphone to call my son in Saskatoon as he is a computer expert.

The man on the phone got more excited and told me to quickly click the "DOWNLOAD" button on the website as the "scammers" were trying to put through five more transactions.

My son told me to tell the fellow that I would go into the Credit Union and deal with the issue directly at which point the caller became more persistent. I thanked him and hung up.

Fortunately, my accounts were safe but it was close!

Afterwards I contacted the Credit Union Manager as well as the Credit Card Company who indicated that these types of scams are prevalent, especially in the Christmas season.

I don't know how the caller knew my name as well as the organization that had issued the credit card but the fact that I had just awoken likely made me more vulnerable than if I had received the call later in the day.

Now that I have had time to think about it, I realize that there wasn't just one thing that caused me to doubt the authenticity of the caller but a number of small things that just didn't add up:
1. Banks and credit card companies do not usually call or email you when there is a problem. When there is suspicious activity on your card, they just deny more than two transactions so the person who is scamming you is stopped.
2. After I answered the call, there was a delay before the caller talked. This occurs when a roto calling device is used which wouldn't be the case if you were being contacted by your bank.
3. The website that the caller wanted me to view had a watermark with the Statue of Liberty in the background. My Credit Union is provincial and not American.
4. The sense of urgency used by the caller alerted me to the fact that he was trying to have me take action whereas the bank normally would act to stop scammers.
5. Clicking on a 'DOWNLOAD' button allows another person access to your computer. NEVER DO THIS.
6. Any problems with your bank can easily be dealt with through the staff that you know and trust at your branch.
7. Contacting my son confirmed that I was on the right track by not cooperating with the caller.

There is an old saying that "Desperate people do desperate things" and we are living in a time when a lot of people are desperate. Just because you are honest doesn't mean that others are honest so be cautious and trust your instincts.
