"Devout Life"

Deuteronomy 8

Moses again reminded the Israelites that they were actually doing God's command (1). God had already rescued them from Egypt and for 40 years God tested their hearts during the journey (2). During that time it was God who guarded and maintained their lives (3-10). They just need to obey God.

Moses also reminded that their later existence in the Promised Land was due to the Lord's inclusion as well (11-18). Even if they get prosperity and success, it is a blessing of mercy from God. Therefore, they must remain obedient to God and must not be high in heart (14). At the end of Moses warned, if the Israelites disobeyed, they were the same as foreign nations who did not know God, and God would destroy them. The presence of the Israelites must demonstrate a docile life among the nations.

Obedience is a manifestation of the recognition of God as God's only and surrender to be fully dependent on Him. When foreign nations see the life of God's devout people, they too will see God's presence.

The Israelites were chosen as God's people, thus God required His people to live according to that calling, meaning to live in complete obedience. So do we, the believers today; We too have been chosen and redeemed from the bondage of sin. Then, we must live according to God's call. We must work on our salvation (cf. Philippians 2:12). Our lives no longer follow the sinful nature of our bodies, blood, and flesh. Instead, we must obey the leading of the Holy Spirit. Our existence must demonstrate an attitude of life that is in accordance with God's words. Thus, those around us can see how man should live in the fear of God.

May we demonstrate a God-abiding attitude of life at work, at home, and when relating in society.
